![]() Ho ho ho Nicole Ramirez, handsome Joe Kocurek (area rep for
Lori
Saldaña) and local businessman Richard Britton were among the
community members at the 76th State
Assemblywoman’s holiday party held last night at
the Balboa Park Club. Entertainment filled the hall including Thai
dancers who encouraged audience participation,
the Gay Men’s Chorus and an African drum and dance troupe from the
World Beat Center. Lori’s guests brought needed items for the Monarch
School,
which
provides an accredited education and basic needs for over 100
homeless and at-risk youth.

Help us remember that
the jerk who cut us off in traffic last night was a single mom who
worked nine hours before rushing home to cook dinner, help
with homework, do the laundry and spend a few precious moments with her
kids. Help us to remember that the pierced, tattooed, disinterested man who can’t make change correctly is a worried 19-year-old college student, balancing his apprehension over final exams with his fear of not getting his student loans for next semester. Remind us that the scary looking bum, begging for money in the same spot every day (who really ought to get a job!) is a slave to addictions that we can only imagine in our worst nightmares. Help us to remember that the old couple, walking annoyingly slowly through the store aisles and blocking our shopping progress, are savoring this moment, knowing that, based on the biopsy report she got back last week, this will be the last year that they go shopping together. We need to remember each day that, of all the gifts given us, the greatest gift is love. It is not enough to share that love with those we hold dear. We need to open our hearts not to just those who are close to us, but to all humanity. Let us be slow to judge and quick to forgive, show patience, empathy and love. God bless the whole world.

![]() The longtime president of Balboa
Park’s Committee of 100, Patricia DeMarce (at left with Mayor-elect
Jerry Sanders & the Old Globe’s Craig Noel and, at right, with
Senator Christine Kehoe & Deputy Mayor Toni Atkins at last week’s
dedication of the west arcade along the Prado) passed away Wednesday
at her Fletcher Hills home. After succeeding
Bea Evenson (the organization’s first president)
DeMarce led the restoration efforts to preserve the Spanish
Colonial architecture in the park over the last three decades,
including the Casa de
Balboa (1981), the Spreckels Organ Pavilion (1983), an arcade near
the Lily Pond on the Prado (1992), the House of Charm (1996) and the
House of Hospitality in (1998). “She was a leader who was so excited
about what she was doing that it was very easy to follow her,” said
Betty Jo Williams, vice president of the Commitee of 100,
which was formed in 1967. |
