Mission Accomplished!Thanks to those who
participated at the 7th Hillcrest Cleanup Event. A big thank you to the
Uptown Sunrise San Diego Rotary Club, Joe Kocurek, Francis Parker and
returning team members for sweeping the Georgia Street Bridge, Park
Blvd. and University Ave. The urban landscape collected tons of
cigarettes butts, broken glass and other trash, but with the help of
the Hillcrest Clean T.E.A.M, more than two dozen bags were filled over
a course of only two hours. The next neighborhood cleanup will be on
March 19 at 10:00am. Join the team in giving back to our
community... Together Everyone Achieves More.

![]() Day of Action @ UCSD UCSD student leaders organized an anti-war demonstration on March 3rd, which included a rally, peace march, entertainment, discussion panel and candlelight vigil from 12:00-10:00 p.m. Cindy Sheehan, Ann Wright and David Swanson held a discussion panel on the war in Iraq at The Price Center Theater. And in closing, a candlelight vigil took place on the Library walk. “We will make this rally a beacon of youthful mass dissent,” stated Dylan Seaton, student leader in the planning. “It’s time that this generation, the one that’s dying every day in Iraq and Afghanistan, voice their opposition to this criminal war. I am tired of UCSD’s status as a portrait of student apathy.” |

![]() A Panel of Political Leaders An array of political representatives met at the University Heights Community Association meeting at Alice Birney Elementary on Thursday evening. The meeting gave an opportunity to shed light on issues that not only affects local community members of University Heights, but affects citizens on city, county, state and federal levels. State Senator Christine Kehoe, County Supervisor Ron Roberts, City Councilwoman Toni Atkins (standing), Joe Kocurek representing State Assemblywoman Lori Saldana and Todd Gloria representing Congresswoman Susan A. Davis, gathered together for a discussion panel to address the concerns of community members. With a broad spectrum of political leaders, topics of homelessness, the Living Wage Law, prescription drugs, taxes and city funding were addressed with different perspectives of government from local to federal. A perfect example of an issue that affects all levels of government that surfaced in the meeting was homelessness. Citizens expressed their concerns on the increase of homelessness and drug-related activities in their neighborhoods. Each leader took turns discussing the problems arising with homelessness and the programs created to provide solutions to those problems. But of course, homelessness is a continuing battle. The panel of political leaders reminds us that we, as citizens, must also do our part to get involved. |

Rebuild New Orleans Months have passed since Hurricane Katrina swept through the southern United States in August 2005. Unfortunately, news coverage on the devastation has faded. But Americans witnessed the spirit of the people of Louisiana as they continued their celebration at Mardi Gras in New Orleans. The destruction of Hurricane Katrina must not be forgotten. We must help rebuild New Orleans. Donate. Volunteer your time. Shop online. Visit New Orleans. ReNew Orleans. “All human situations have their inconveniences. We feel those of the present but neither see nor feel those of the future; and hence we often make troublesome changes without amendment, and frequently for the worse.” — Benjamin Franklin

![]() And The Show Went On! The rain stopped and
Hillcrest Mardi Gras went on without a hitch.
Partygoers were greeted with beaded necklaces at the entrance.
Performers from Il Circo and visitors wore gorgeous costumes (shown
posing for the camera above). Sue Palmer, Candye Kane and Tootie &
the Lip Girls pumped the audience with music that resonated
in your soul. Even a ferris wheel stood tall above the Hillcrest Mardi
Gras! Outdoor heaters were provided around the
beer garden to keep guests cozy. DJ Taj kept the dance tent jamming
with high energy techno. Overall, the party was a success because not
only did it celebrate the spirit of Fat Tuesday, it benefits the GSDBA
Charitable Foundation for youth scholarships and Hillcrest Association
for neighborhood improvements.
