Hillcrest Clean TEAM, May 7, 2006

Good going,
Clean T.E.A.M!
Yesterday was perfect weather for sweeping the sidewalks of our neighborhood, and Hillcrest looked SO MUCH better! Congratulations to Tim and Rafael on winning the tickets to next week’s garden walk in Mission Hills. The next clean-up will be Sunday, May 14. Everyone is welcome to bring a broom and meet up under the sign! Join us. Help Clean-up Hillcrest.

Plan now to attend this Saturday’s Mission Hills Garden Walk!

Hillcrest Clean TEAM

It’s almost the first Sunday in May — Time for another Clean T.E.A.M event! Come on y’all...meet up under the Hillcrest sign at 9:45am for java (compliments of David’s Coffeehouse) and City Deli cookies! Then we’ll sweep up Hillcrest for two hours to get the trash off the street. (Ophelia, I’m not talkin ’bout you!) Neighbors are encouraged to bring problem areas to our attention, and we'll send out a pod of workers to see what we can do. Join us. Help Hillcrest. We’ll be finished by noon when everyone meets back at Fifth and University for prize time. (Our favorite part!)

Bonnie Dumanis, Sue Palmer, Julia WebbSuzanne and Dan

The
place to be last night was at Diversionary Theatre in University Heights as local artist Julie Warren inaugurated the playhouse’s refurbished lobby with an exhibition of her colorful impressionistic paintings and prints. A percentage of Julie’s sales also benefited the LGBT community theatre. Suzanne Dukes (at left) bought one of Julie’s paintings...and was served Big Kitchen brownies and cookies by Diversionary’s executive director Dan Kirsch while listening to Sue Palmer’s Boogie Noir. The smiling trio in the photo above is Bonnie Dumanis, Queen Sue and Julia Webb. Diversionary’s next play is Pulp, a sexy homage to 1950’s lesbian pulp fiction fueled by heat, hormones and whiskey...(sounds like trouble!) It will run from May 12-June 11. Get your tickets now by calling (619) 220-0097.

Are you supporting today’s Day without Immigrants?
May Day rallies across the country protested HR-4437. Organizers of the national boycott. National boycott organizers are demanding nothing less than full amnesty and dignity for the millions of undocumented workers presently living and working in the U.S. They ask supporters to keep $$$ in your pockets tomorrow and spend no money at any business.

Many other shops and eateries may also be closed — plan ahead. On Monday evening (5:30-7:30pm) join a rally & candlelight vigil in Balboa Park at the corner of Sixth and Laurel which will feature speakers and voter registration.
