Nancy’s granddaughter, Hannah turned eight over this past weekend. Buddies Emyle and Kaitlyn helped her celebrate in Balboa Park. After enjoying the new dinosaur exhibit at the Natural History Museum the girls basked in the sunshine as they watched fish and turtles in the reflection pool in front of the Botanical Building developed by Alfred D. Robinson. |

In 1925 the Mission Beach Amusement Center built by John D. Spreckels was dedicated. Featured the Plunge (a saltwater swimming pool), a fun house, a roller rink, a dance hall, a midway and the Giant Dipper roller coaster which opened a few weeks later on July 4th — (very still kewl..and SD’s best ride.) Take a trip for five bucks (or wait until Tuesdays from 4pm until closing to take advantage of $1 trips!) Learn more about historic Belmont Park. Also on this
date...33 years ago today:
Tom Bradley was elected the first black mayor of Los Angeles. |

![]() This
year’s HillQuest, an Urban Guide to 92103+, will be at our advertisers the last week of
June — pick up your free copy! HillQuests are filled with history
learned over the year that we share with the community...and beyond.
The collage at the right will grace the cover of HQ4. Our community
main page features another new collage from our fourth edition which
also has insight, trivia and an extensive self-guided walk around
Hillcrest and adjacent neighborhoods. Nancy and I would like to send a
big shout out of thanks to everyone involved in this edition for your
contributions of stories, hard work and detailed attention. We’ll be
celebrating with a 10am-5pm streetfair on Sunday, July 9 to enjoy the
completion of this year’s guidebook. All HillQuest fans are invited!
We’re looking for jugglers, street chalkers, artists and potters.
