301 University decision postponed until September 12th
Attorneys for 301 University received a continuance from City Council yesterday afternoon so they may further study a 20-page report from City Attorney Mike Aguirre’s office that was delivered last Friday. Several members of the audience hoping to speak wore large NO 301 badges. Visit 301support.org or savehillcrest.com to educate yourself then call or email the city council to let them know if you are for or against 301.301 University dioramaNo on 301
Unlike other neighborhoods, Hillcrest has no resident-based organization focused on the quality of life in our community.

Is anyone interested in getting a group going?

301 University shadow study
Tomorrow
(7/18/06) 301 University will be decided by City Council. Will a 12-story tower one block from the Hillcrest sign change our “village” feel? Please visit SaveHillcrest.com or 301support.org and educate yourself. The current CityBeat also has a story on how this project will affect our neighborhood.

The map at the left is one of four studies showing the shadows this huge project will cast over Hillcrest during the year (this is during the winter solstice). Click on it to see the shadows thrown during all four seasons. None of the people who will be making Tuesday’s decision live in Hillcrest. You have one day left. Let the San Diego City Council know if you want them to vote yes or no on 301.

HillQuest Ice Cream TEAM, July 14, 2006 Hillcrest timelapse from 7/13/06

In celebration of national ice cream month, Deyer’s hosted the Rocky Road Challenge, a fun-filled scavenger hunt around Horton Plaza and downtown yesterday afternoon. HillQuest had a team (Nancy, Travis, Ann, Cathy). So did Assemblymember Lori Saldana’s office! Creativity, strategy and teamwork won the first place team (not us) a stocked ice cream freezer throughout the rest of this year!

Happy birthday, Harriet!

“Mayor Jerry Sanders has reached the end of his rope with Kroll Inc., and I’m darn glad to see it. However, it sure seems to me that we ought to be able to do something more than just publicly embarrass these thieves.”

301 University

Care about Hillcrest’s future?

Next Tuesday the 301 University project
(across from Hamburger Mary’s) will be decided by members of the City Council. Are you for or against it? 301 may provide a few dozen more parking places than we have now. Is it worth it?

Visit
SaveHillcrest.com or 301support.org and educate yourself on this development in the heart of the neighborhood and let the council know what you think. Speak up — it’s your community.

SD Floral Association float, Hop in the Hood

SD Floral Parades throughout history....
July 20, 1911Floral Parade in the park: “This feature is to be under the direction of the Women’s Auxiliary. It will be the first opportunity the public will have to view the queen of the carnival in her royal robes. Miss Richards, as queen will be surrounded by eight maids of honor. More than 100 automobiles and other vehicles, each decorated in real flowers, will compose this parade.” [LATimes]
May 15, 1915Festival of Flowers at San Diego Fair: “There was a miniature rose parade formed of the little electriquettes, all flower-trimmed, girls with flower-trimmed doll carriages, and of go-carts with babies. The first prize was taken by the entry of the Southern California Building. It was an electriquette exquisitely trimmed with hundreds of Cecile Brunner roses and ferns from the Model Farm of the Southern Counties exhibit.” LATimes [5/16/1915]
July 9, 2006Flower Power Parade at the Hop in the ’Hood: HillQuest organizes a mini-rose bowl parade as one of the highlights for their annual July block party...and the Floral Association takes first place in a crowded competition of floats decorated with at least 50% flowers or plants.
