“I think that what Mike has done is that he injected integrity into almost everything that we do. I don’t know that I agree with all of his positions, but I do think that Mike is looking out for what’s right.”

“When I look at it, I still think the density & the walling off & the degree that it is, it wouldn’t be my personal preference. It would be better to have more green space & more public-use space.”

“The folk songs of the 1960s will never be written again because of President George Bush. He has hampered the liberties of my country in the name of September 11. Songs now can only talk of patriotism they cannot mention peace.”

John's FIfth Avenue in Hillcrest -- alleged thief> Hillcrest timelines <

John’s Fifth Avenue Robbed Twice in Ten Days

John’s Fifth Avenue Luggage, 3833 Fourth Avenue, has had two break-ins in the past week and a half. They sent HillQuest this photo of the (alleged) thief in an attempt to outreach to other area shops and share information. The man used pilers to pull the lock completely out of the door, then tripped the inside lock. He stole money and merchandise from the longtime Hillcrest shopkeepers. The crimes are committed at night with the aid of a man during the first break-in, then woman who drove the getaway car on the second occasion. If you have pertinent information to share, please contact Sue Sneeringer at (619) 574-0086 or the SDPD.

In today’s UT letters to the Editor: Condo conversions do hurt renters...
Regarding “Legally condos/San Diego lowers hurdle to affordable homes” (Editorial, Aug. 7): Your editorial was an insult to renters and those who work for affordable housing for San Diegans. The Union-Tribune claims “there is absolutely no evidence that condo conversions have hurt local renters collectively.” I don’t know what neighborhood the editorial writer lives in, but here in Hillcrest there is great frustration and anger over renters being displaced to make way for ugly, overpriced, completely unaffordable condo projects. Anti-condo graffiti is cropping up everywhere, and Hillcrest diehards are leaving for neighborhoods where home demolitions by the block aren’t a daily occurrence. read more

“If that had been our report, maybe, just maybe, this whole issue wouldn’t have happened. Maybe someone could argue that we wouldn’t have a ballpark then...But maybe someone could argue, well, you couldn’t afford a ballpark.”
