“When UCSD bought the county hospital in the early ’80s, it made a commitment and a promise to the community to care for the indigent. It has broken that promise.”

AIDS Walk

It’s gonna be a busy weekend!

AIDS Walk, San Diego’s 17th annual walk for HIV/AIDS support and research (the city’s largest single-day donation-based fund-raiser in San Diego County), kicks off Sunday morning in Balboa Park. Established in 1989, the walk was originally created to help fund a few care and prevention programs, but has since grown to include dozens of agencies serving thousands of adults and children living with HIV/AIDS.Participants in the walk may choose to complete the five-kilometer walk or the ten-kilometer USA Track & Field-sanctioned run. Both events begin shortly after 8am. Here’s their website.

“If (they) are working together, it should be to solve problems of fire prevention, gang violence, homelessness, affordable housing, clean water or other public issues — not a stadium.”

Balboa Park
We’re lucky to have this fabulous parkfor our big backyard! And as a bonus several museums have no admission each Tuesday (on a rotating schedule throughout Balboa Park). Today enjoy the Aerospace and the Auto museums, Hall of Champions and International Cottages. Thanks to ball bearings, the Timken Museum of Art is your gift — admission’s always free! It’s also Tues Nite Out in Hillcrest as merchants (mostly restaurants) offer discounts on great stuff...check out Lalo’s $1.25 fish tacos.

Dick Cheney for peace

Peace March today at Horton Plaza
The Iraq War will end when people refuse to support it! The Campaign for a Declaration of Peace called on Congress for a concrete and rapid plan for peace in Iraq by September 21, yet the war continues. They now call on people to take action, withdraw your consent from this war and support a comprehensive peace process! Street theatre and peace march will take place Monday from 4-7pm on Broadway between Third and Fourth avenues just north of Horton Plaza. (The event is continuous, come when you can!)
