Pennsylvania detour in Hillcrest, San Diego

Trouble driving around the neighborhood?
What was once the headquarters for the American Red Cross will soon be home for San Diego’s urban elite. The new Atlas Hillcrest development (now underway between Fourth and Fifth avenues south of Pennsylvania) is putting up two “intimate” buildings with one and two-bedroom condominiums. As with all construction, driving around the neighborhood has gotten even more difficult. But it makes us wonder...if a building over twice this size goes in at 301 University, how will Hillcrest traffic be impacted?

Gayzette #1

Do you remember the San Diego Gayzette?

With the first edition printed on Thursday, September 2, 1982, the San Diego Gayzette quickly became the ’80s most popular LGBT publication. Local entrepreneur (now realtor) Carla Coshow and a hardy band of community activists published the award-winning weekly until 1986. HillQuest has each of these paper treasures in our archives and will be scanning/posting articles to share this slice of history from Hillcrest.

We’re out!

Mr. A's

Mr. A’s at the top of Bankers Hill
Situated on a full square block bounded by Laurel & Maple between Fourth & Fifth in Park West, this landmark building is once more brightly lit for the holidays. Mostly professional offices, the tower features a penthouse restaurant offering outstanding views of the city, the harbor and Balboa Park. It’s also a special treat for a sunset cocktail or a memorable lunch or dinner celebration.

1914 Balboa Park Don’t say we didn’t warn you....

Traffic Alert: Stay off 163 at rush hour today!

For the next two evenings (today 5-10pm & Sat noon-10pm) hundreds of thousands of San Diegans will be flooding into the heart of Balboa Park from all over the county to participate in December Nights. There will be plenty of tasty treats, crowds and holiday entertainment. Live in the neighborhood? Walk.

As a bonus...many of the park’s museums will be open with FREE admission. If you don’t mind dealing with LOTS of people, go! Dress warm. It’s gonna be
COLD!

Hillcrest’s Vavotte

It’s a crime!! More SDPD stats for the neighborhood

Anyone seen Hillcrest’s Javotte? This sultry strawberry blonde mannequin, always dressed in tasteful outfits or seasonal costumes (at Halloween she masqueraded as a witch) has been a balcony fixture for more than a year at the second floor railing on Third Avenue between University and Robinson. Sadly someone recently abducted the beautiful Jovette in her Veterans Day outfit — a black dress with brass buttons and a Navy hat.

Her caretaker, Jim Ruboyianes, doesn’t know whether someone lassoed her or scaled the building to the balcony, but he awoke to a crashing sound shortly after 1am and looked out to find a broken stand and one of her hands. Her right arm was recovered on the ground. Jim and Javotte’s owner, Glen Davis, have received no ransom notes or leads and hold little hope of getting her back. Please keep your eyes open around the neighborhood for her safe return.
