Bankers Hill/Park West
Community Meeting This evening from 6:30-8pm at St. Paul’s Manor (328 Maple Street) The focus of the meeting is an intent to create sense of place and a distinct identity for Bankers Hill which will include appropriate landscaping, lighting, street furnishing and identity signage. This will be the initial community meeting for a streetscape and design study for the Fourth/Fifth/Sixth Avenue corridor. These improvements will be done in coordination with the implementation of traffic calming measures currently under study. The meeting is open to all members of Bankers Hill/Park West. Glen Schmidt, President of Schmidt Design Group, and Brad Lewis, Group Manager of Helix Environmental Planning, have been commissioned to do the study and will be making the presentation. They are seeking input from residents, business and property owners in Bankers Hill about what themes and design guidelines should be established for the community. This study is taking place because Bankers Hill/Park West community effectively advocated in 2006 to make it happen (and because they received vital support from District 2 City Council Member Kevin Faulconer). |

do, yeah. And I fully understand they will...they could try to stop me
from doing it, but, uh, I’ve made my decision and we’re going forward.”

Wheehoo It’s Party Time! The 6th annual Hillcrest Mardi Gras is a little over a month away. Celebrate Fat Tuesday (February 20th) in the heart of the ’hood — on University Avenue between Third and Fourth. Whatever the weather, we’ll be partying in the

and everyone’s favorite diva Candye Kane. So grab your
costumes & beads...then leave your troubles at home ’cause...It’s
time to let the good times roll. All proceeds will
benefit both the GSDBA Charitable Foundation and the Hillcrest
Association (just in time to celebrate Hillcrest’s first 100 years).
This year’s Hillcrest Mardi Gras will take place from 6-11pm. See you there! Pre-party tickets are now on sale for $15 ($20 on Fat Tuesday) and $50 for a VIP Pass ($75 on Fat Tuesday). Tickets are available at Urban Mo’s, 308 University Avenue and at Obelisk Bookstore, 1029 University Avenue. |

>>> Hillcrest residents are forming a voice
for the village. A steering committee will meet this
Tuesday, January 16th at 6:30pm. What
should we be called? Send
us your suggestion. One idea is
the “Hillcrest Town Council.” There’s power in having an
organized residents’ group, and the village is in desperate need of a
voice. Please
invite your neighbors to next month’s meeting at Joyce Beers Community
Center (6:30 Tuesday, February 13th)...watch us grow! ![]() Hillcrest resident Joyce Beers (1929-1989) was a community-minded activist instrumental in the development of the Hillcrest business district — the first association of its kind in San Diego. Joyce served on the SD Transit Board for 16 years, was co-founder of the Uptown Community Planning Committee, ran for city council in 1979 and was the first Executive Director of the Hillcrest Association. Joyce was also instrumental in founding the first homeless shelter for women and children at the YMCA. Hillcrest’s community meeting center in the Uptown District is rightfully named in her honor. |

“Hillcrest....has about 60 acres
of park for 35,700 people, a ratio of 0.6 acres per 1,000 people. That’s 2.2 fewer acres
than San Diego requires under its General Plan, the city’s guiding
land-use document.” |
