Wes Edwards & Gail Santillian -- The Brass Rail

Hillcrest’s First Gay Bar is Revitalized
Manager Wes Edwards & owner Gail Santillian held a grand re-opening of The Brass Rail Wednesday night. The city’s oldest gay bar (it first opened in 1960 across the street) has now been transformed into Hillcrest’s swankiest cocktail lounge. Stop by Fifth & Robinson to check out their cell phone booth, beautifully designed restrooms, group lounging areas and an elevated private VIP room featuring bottle service.

Hillcrest Centennial Logo

Hillcrest’s Centennial is Underway
“Hillcrest” is one hundred years old. Before 1907 this part of San Diego (& much of North Park) was called University Heights, but when William Whitson set up a real estate office at Fifth & University to sell lots for his “Hillcrest Company” the name caught on...and the rest is history. At their last meeting the HBA formed a centennial committee, and many plans are now underway for celebrations thoughout the year. Your ideas and energy are welcome. Contact HillQuest with your suggestions.

Cathy Lee & Todd Gloria

The volunteers of the Hillcrest Clean T.E.A.M....totally rock!!! Thanks for showing up and making a difference in our neighborhood. Tonight we had a thank you party at Baja Betty’s where Todd Gloria presented a proclamation from Congresswoman Susan Davis to organizer Cathy Lee (at left) for over 15 months of dedicated service to the community. Stay tuned for future quarterly clean-ups and a Hillcrest Centennial Super Clean-up on Saturday, July 14th sponsored by the Hillcrest History Guild along with many supportive local businesses and organizations. Thanks for caring!

Hillcrest residents Stewart Rennison and Jeff Fallert
Hillcrest residents Stewart Rennison (of SeaMaster Cruises) and his handsome partner Jeff Fallert added to the charm of the neighborhood on Thursday evening as they strolled Seventh Avenue on their way to the GSDBA/Park Manor mixer at the Top of the Park. Originally forn NY, Jeff had one too many blizzards a few years ago and headed west. When not working on computers at Hewlett Packard, he creates decks...along with this own guitar.

This could really essentially dismantle the Park and Rec department and we have not even been consulted.”

“The fatal shooting of a man in a Hillcrest dessert shop during the holidays may have had nothing to do with the police shortage. But Hillcrest residents perceive (rightly or wrongly) that the rash of crimes in this area has to do with criminals and aggressive panhandlers perceiving that we’re easy prey.”

Tracy Nguyen and roasted pig

To promote success Tracy Nguyen held a traditional Buddhist blessing for her new Hillcrest salon this morning. Stop by Divine Nails & Spa, 3739 Sixth Avenue (at Evans Place) to be pampered with great service and state of the art equipment. Tracy worked at Hillcrest’s Infinity Salon on University Avenue before making her dream a reality by creating her own shop.

If you’d like to make an appointment, call (618) 295-6737. As a bonus — mention “HillQuest” with a pedicure...and get a
manicure for free.
