Grand Opening in the Uptown District! Councilwoman Toni Atkins (right) welcomed First Future Credit Union’s branch manager Janice Buyer to the community at a grand opening soiree held tonight in their new Hillcrest location (corner of Vermont & Cleveland). Over the past few weeks, the community has entered a drawing to win cash prizes. Lots of moo-la was given away in several drawings with five winners receiving $250, ten happy campers getting $100 and lucky duck Millicent Kent’s name being drawn for the $1,000 grand prize. |

“I do have concerns about these notice
issues. ... I don’t believe 99 percent of the people in my district
could go through this and remotely have an idea of what any of this
means to them and what they’re looking at one month down the road let
alone eight years down the road.” — Councilman Brian Maienschein casting a no vote against the
water rate increase (he lost 6-2)

excellent choice. I think he set the direction on the right track.” |

A bankruptcy option for city makes sense While San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders jousts at the windmills of the unions, pension board and legal system, the burden of ill-gotten and outrageous city employee pension benefits (benefits that the average taxpayer could only dream of) is carried on the backs of taxpayers, and in the future on the backs of their children. And all the while, city services and infrastructure continue to deteriorate, adding insult to the taxpayers’ burden. I admire Mayor Sanders, but common sense long ago dictated that the only way out of this corrupt mess is through a judicially supervised reorganization of the city’s finances, as wisely provided by Congress many years ago. To put one’s personal dislike of a judicial reorganization ahead of common sense and the taxpayers’ well-being cannot be morally justified. San Diegan James B.

This
morning Uptown Planners and area councilmembers Toni Atkins and Kevin
Faulconer sponsored a presentation of the Uptown Historic Survey draft that has been
in the works for several years. The Recital Hall in Balboa Park was the
location for the first in a series of forums. The results are important
to all of Uptown, since it will provide a catalog of potentially
historic homes and other buildings, which may help prevent demolitions
of historic buildings and serve as a basis for several proposed
historical districts. Information included a recommendation of four
proposed thematic districts and 19 geographic districts. heart of the ’hood is the current home to Wear it Again Sam and Bluestocking Books (3817-3823 Fifth Avenue) > The next step will be at the city’s Historic Resource Board on March 22. If approved, it then goes to City Council for approval/implementation. As SD’s first trolley line suburb and the original center of our gay community, should Hillcrest be identified as an Historic District? |
