“Next to downtown, Hillcrest has the highest rate of transients in the city, which, overall, has approximately 1,200 people without a place to call home.”

House of Heirlooms building

House of Heirlooms building deemed Historic (again)

Thursday afternoon the City of San Diego’s Historic Resources Board agreed with city staffer Mike Tudury and unanimously voted to once again designate the House of Heirlooms structure as historical. In January the board approved it on two merits, but it was reheard yesterday because of improper noticing. After public testimony and board discussion a third criteria of historic merit was added. The 1919 building is the oldest that remains from the original St. Joseph’s Hospital complex.

Hillcrest "temporary" pipeRobinson Avenue water leak in Hillcrest
Hillcrest Water Pipes Leak
The temporary water source pipes that the city has placed along the curbs around Hillcrest are having a few problems. Two burst open yesterday morning at connection valves. The accidents caused water geysers (and blocked streets) along Robinson Avenue near Fourth Avenue. Two SDPD motorcycle officers blocked the street while waiting for the city’s water department to remedy the situation. Water was flowing on Hillcrest streets again on Monday as other pipes had problems.

“Contrary to what is stated in (last week’s) editorial, the Hillcrest Town Council does not have a ‘no growth’ position. Our development committee passed a motion asking the Town Council to approve the following policy statement: ‘New development in Hillcrest should fit in with adjacent housing in terms of size, lot footprint, height, bulk, setbacks, type of housing, character and integrity, with allowances made for zoning boundaries.’
— Hillcrest resident and Uptown Planner Andrew Towne (this week’s GLT letters to the editor)
