Sock hop balloonsSock Hop 3

Rock ’n Rollin’ to the Oldies
The Hillcrest Centennial kicked off last night with a neighborhood sock hop at the Joyce Beers Community Center. Sandy and Alex (left) had great outfits and were presented centennial mugs for their stylish efforts. Local Realtors Trent St. Louis and Tony Azar sponsored Friday’s event along with food contributions from Ralphs, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Baja Betty’s and City Deli. Mike Friedberg and Richard Pereya of Decor with Distinction transformed the Uptown meeting hall into an amazing party palace. HillQuest created a slideshow of area images through the years as DJ Laura Jane played everyone’s favorite tunes from the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s.

“Right now developers see Hillcrest as the wild wild west, plenty of old homes on decent lots with generous zoning and height allowances. ‘Mow ‘em and Grow ‘em’ is a common phrase of local developers with their eye on Hillcrest. Hopefully both renters and homeowners will become involved in creating a system that helps maintain the beautiful charm that makes up this special neighborhood. Otherwise get out your cowboy hats because this special and quaint community will have a whole new look and feel in the next ten years.”

Try this Math Problem...
Here is an interesting math trick for you to enjoy.
1. Grab a calculator. (You won’t be able to do this one in your head.)
2. Key in the first three digits of your phone number. (NOT the area code.)
3. Multiply by 80.
4. Add 1.
5. Multiply by 250.
6. Add the last 4 digits of your phone number.
7. Add the last 4 digits of your phone number again.
8. Subtract 250.
9. Divide number by 2.
We’d like to know who figured this out, and why they aren’t running our country.

Pernicano's graffiti

Pernicano Still Won’t Sell
Even as he now regularly deals with vandals, George Pernicano still won’t let go of his once popular Hillcrest eateries (now eyesores) that have been closed since 1985. Casa di Baffi and his namesake Pernicano’s – just sit there, gathering cobwebs and graffiti. The U-T shares a bit of insight re: the former restaurateur’s story in Sunday’s edition.

Come on, George, help the community by allowing an investor to improve your dilapidated property.

Floral Association Centennial

Floral Association Celebrates 100 Years
Members and guests of the San Diego Floral Association held a centennial tea at the US Grant Hotel yesterday afternoon in "Kate Sessions" at the Centennial Tea, March 24, 2007conjunction with their spectacular weekend flower show. One of the oldest garden clubs in the nation looked back over the last hundred years of accomplishments. “Kate Sessions” (one of the founders) started off the program aptly entitled “Revisiting Our Past.” The Mother of Balboa Park told tales from the turn of the century as she reminisced over San Diego’s rich history. Several Floral members modeled fashions through the century before awards were presented to Marie Walsh, Velma West, Walter Anderson and the Roy & Barbara Jones family. The US Grant setting and service was elegant, and wonderful time was enjoyed by all.
