April 22, 2007 Hillcrest Cleanup

Thanks to Everyone for Pitching in

Three dozen volunteers joined the Hillcrest Town Council and Hillcrest Clean T.E.A.M. from as far away as Chula Vista’s Hilltop High School to sweep both sides of over 30 blocks and alleys throughout the east side of Hillcrest this morning. What a difference a couple of hours make. Please don’t litter...and pick up others’ trash to make Hillcrest look better! Cigarette butts are especially nasty! Our next cleanup is scheduled for Saturday morning, July 14 (one week ahead of the gay pride parade.)

Hillcrest MAD worker Gonzalo Cota, April 18, 2007

MAD about a Better Hillcrest

In 2006 the Hillcrest Business Improvement Association (HBIA) recognized that the City of San Diego lacked the fiscal resources to maintain our neighborhood services and began to create a Maintenance Assessment District (MAD) to keep the core of our neighborhood cleaned up. The Hillcrest Clean TEAM filled in for 15 months in between.

Property owners within the designated MAD area voted to pay self-imposed assessment fees to underwrite the project. Look forward to having the sidewalks swept and pressure washed, tree maintenance, graffiti removal and more security. Worker Gonzalo Cota (right) enjoys his new job and says cigarette butts are what he picks up most...“hundreds, no — thousands” he says.

The MAD area covers most of the storefront area from Pennsylvania to Washington Street and from First to Sixth Avenue. After MAD’s success is visible, it’s hoped that other sections of Hillcrest will petition the HBIA for boundary extentions.

Hillcrest Centennial birthday cakeHillcrest Centennial logo 1907-2007Celebrate Hillcrest’s First 100 Years!

2007 marks Hillcrest’s first centennial, and celebrations will continue all year long. In 1906 this neighborhood was called “University Heights” along with much of San Diego’s uptown area. William Wesley Whitson purchased and subdivided forty acres north of University Avenue to Lewis Street (between First and Sixth avenues) and opened a “Hillcrest” sales office at Fifth & University on August 2, 1907. This year we’ll be celebrating with FREE birthday cake under the sign! For more information visit Hillcrest History Guild and/or Hillcrest Centennial.

“As entertaining as the political theater at City Hall sometimes is, it's often cringe-inducing. None of it’s more embarrassing than when city leaders reveal that they don’t know how the system is supposed to work.”

Official San Diego LGBT Pride Souvenir Program
This year’s Pride parade/festival will be held July 21-22nd, one week earlier than previous years...and the official program will hit the streets June 18th packed with information and goodies. Circulation on the full color, glossy program will double to 40,000 copies, but retain last year’s ad rates. The deadline is Monday, May 14th. Ad Ink Advertising Agency, the home of HillQuest will again be coordinating the program’s ads. “We are excited to work with Pride again this year,” said Nancy Moors. “2007 will double the distribution, but keep 2006 ad rates. This is a great value for businesses that want to outreach to the LGBT community.” Distribution will include 16,000 copies delivered throughout San Diego and the festival; 8,000 in Long Beach; 10,000 in Los Angeles; 5,000 in Palm Springs; and 500 copies will be available in Las Vegas and Phoenix. Here are this year’s ad rates.

No other Pride program will provide such a wide distribution and reasonable rates. Businesses and organizations are also reminded that unlike any other local Pride program, the net proceeds from this book are returned to the community in the form of contributions and grants. Be a part of this win-win publication.

“It seems that there’s been lots of problems with some of these new systems. I want to hear a presentation so that we know where the holes are.”
