May Gray in Hillcrest

Cold and Crappy Weather

We’re here...deep into May Gray.
“You can always rely on that,” National Weather Service forecaster Steve Vanderburg. “It doesn’t matter what kind of winter we had. It can be wet or dry. In May and June, you know you’re going to get it.” Some are more direct...it’s “cold and crappy.” Be patient...June Gloom is still weeks away.

Balboa Park reflecting pool
Free Admission to Art Museums...and More!
What lucky duckies we are to have Balboa Park as our big backyard! (click here for a HillQuest iMovie.) As a bonus several museums have no admission every Tuesday. Tomorrow (the third Tuesday of this month) you may have free access to the Art Institute, the Museum of Man, the Friendship Garden (enjoy the koi), the Mingei International and/or the Museum of Art.

If that isn’t enough incentive...as always the Timken Museum of Art and Botanical Building will also admit you for nada.

Happy Birthday, Father Tony

Tony Noble, the Rector of Hillcrest’s All Saints’ Episcopal Church celebrated his 60th birthday with a Thursday evening High Mass followed by a festive party in their fellowship hall. A tribute was performed by the SD Men’s Chorus as global guests (including his Australian Sunday school teacher), the congregation and friends gathered to honor this special man who has brought new energy and diversity into the neighborhood’s oldest church.

Tower on Fifth, Hillcrest, San Diego

Jean Claude’s Atelier, Hillcrest, San Diego

Ready for More Condos
in Hillcrest?

A 150-foot, 14-story Tower on 5th is being planned to replace several one-story structures, including two 1923 Mission Revival bungalow court buildings and Jean Claude Atelier’s salon on the east side of Fifth at Walnut. Their website says construction for 16 high-end residential units will begin this month at 3445 Fifth Avenue. Surprisingly (or maybe not)...the community is just now learning about it. Perhaps an interim height ordinance is overdue. (It has been endorsed by several organizations including the Hillcrest Town Council, Hillcrest Business Improvement Association, SOHO, Mission Hills BID, the University Heights Community Development Corporation and Mission Hills Heritage).
