No Access this Saturday to the
Vermont Street Pedestrian Bridge
The City of San Diego will be replacing the missing bollards at the south end of the Vermont Street pedestrian bridge this Saturday. Because of the work, access on the popular span from Hillcrest to University Heights must be blocked. During this construction, the Hillcrest History Guild will be burying a time capsule in honor of our centennial. A rededication of the bridge will be held in July on a date to be announced.

The City’s Development Services announced tonight that the 1988 Uptown Community Plan has been fully-funded for an update.
Councilmembers Toni Atkins and Kevin Faulconer (who helped moved the effort forward) attended the Uptown Planners meeting at Joyce Beers Community Center. Several public workshops and opportunities will be held along the way for public input (it’s expected to be completed by mid-2010). City Planning Director Bill Anderson gave a PowerPoint presentation re: height limitations. The city is willing to support a version of the Interim Height Ordinance that would involve pushing any projects over 65 feet (or 50 feet depending on the area) into a descretionary review category requiring Process 4 or 5, and specific findings. This ordinance would “sunset” when the community plan is updated. It is a huge step forward, but to quote Mission Hills resident (and IHO promoter) Barry Hager, “the devil will be in the details.” Stay tuned...

How many Elvises did you see? There were 35 this year along with almost 4,000 members of the purple-shirted Team in Training who blended well with the community’s colorful jacaranda trees Sunday morning. A 27-year-old Kenyan (Daniel Yego) pulled away from the lead pack just after the mile 19 marker and ran away with the marathon, finishing in two hours, nine minutes and four seconds.

Love those Jacarandas!
Uptown has turned purple with jacaranda trees lining many streets throughout the neighborhood.
Although the vast majority of our jacarandas are purple, we heard there’s an orange one somewhere in Sherman Heights, according to Drew Potocki, the city's urban forester. Anyone able to locate this wild orange tree and send HillQuest a photo?
