“Wouldn’t it be far better to teach our children tolerance by helping them enjoy the Padres-Braves game with the full panoply of people who make up our San Diego community?”

Monster 301 University

from Tom Mullaney with Friends of San Diego...

12-story 301 University Project Update
The lawsuit against the “Monster Building” is coming to a culmination. All the legal arguments have been submitted. The court hearing was scheduled for today, June 28, but has been postponed at the court’s request. A news release last week reported that the original developers had sold all or part of their interest to another developer, Laurus. The new developer is apparently redesigning the project, but not lowering the height. Our lawsuit has not been affected. Money is needed. The “Save Hillcrest” group has paid about 75% of the total estimated expenses on the lawsuit project. That’s a big accomplishment for Hillcrest and our little grassroots organization!

We’ve got to raise the other quarter of the funds in the next few weeks. Please consider how you can help:
**Pick up some literature at the office (call first). **Call or visit friends, neighbors, associates or local business owners. **Mail a letter to people that you know. I have return envelopes to include. **Make a contribution yourself. **Checks payable to “Friends of San Diego.” One of our hard-working team raised $2,200 by contacting friends and neighbors. She hand-delivered a letter to her neighbors, asked for their contribution and got a good response. You will never know who’s willing to help until you ask! Let’s make the final effort needed to finance this lawsuit and prevent the “Monster Building” from destroying the neighborhood character of central Hillcrestand creating a precedent for more misplaced high-rises! For more info, please contact Tom Mullaney at (619) 795-1753 or tmullaney@aol.com.

This means today you can visit the Art Institute, Museum of Man, Friendship Garden, Mingei and or the Museum of Art for free! Thanks to ball bearings, the Timken Museum of Art is your gift — admission’s always free. Other deals...an International Organ Festival on Monday evenings at 7:30pm and Twilight in the Park concert series featuring live music has been delighting visitors for 27 years with programs ranging from military bands and Dixieland jazz to big band swing and Latin salsa on the stage of the majestic Spreckels Organ Pavilion. “It’s not just the bones — it’s not just the steel that’s up there right now — they have to reevaluate and redesign the whole exterior cladding system, all the glazing.”

Hillcrest Mobility Study Workshop, Tom Mullaney and Jeffery Tom

Comments from Tom Mullaney with Friends of San Diego re: the Hillcrest Corridor Mobility Study and community input from yesterday’s workshop at St. Paul’s Cathedral: (1) This Hillcrest transportation study is sounding an alarm with residents. SD must think long and hard about closing four north-south vehicle lanes out of the ten lanes on Fourth, Fifth and Sixth avenues. Consultant’s figures show that vehicle traffic would be impeded, yet there would be little offsetting benefit for mass transit. (2) Adding curb pop-outs at 66 intersections would be excessive. We need traffic engineering, not fads. (3) The worst idea is closing two lanes on Sixth Avenue, with diagonal parking along Balboa Park. This would slow traffic to a near standstill for commuters and parkgoers.
