Spirit of Stonewall Celebration, July 15, 2007 in Balboa Park

Benny Cartwright and friendsSpirit of Stonewall Celebration Opens LGBT Pride

Balboa Park’s majestic Spreckels Organ Pavilion was the site for Sunday afternoon’s kick off to next weekend’s
LGBT Pride festivities including Saturday’s parade through Hillcrest followed by the two-day festival in the Martson Point area of Balboa Park. Emceed by Laura Jane, the rally provided a stage for year's award recipients, speakers and entertainers to motivate, enlighten and revive the crowd. Pride volunteers Benny Cartwright, Ricky Cervantes, Isaac Castro and Marcus Fisher sold bottled water and shared info re: next weekend.

Multiple performers and speakers brought life to the stage where together a commitment to the LGBT equal rights movement, celebration of our unity and community diversity was renewed. This first event of the Pride celebrations, offered an opportunity for the community to stand together and celebrate a shared vision of freedom and equality.

The outdoor event commemorated the 1969 Stonewall uprising in New York City’s Greenwich Village, which is considered to be the commencement of the contemporary lesbian and gay liberation movement.

Stephen Whitburn & Todd Gloria at the Hillcrest Centennial clean-up, Saturday, July 14, 2007
Thanks to all the Hillcrest Centennial Clean-up volunteers
Orange t-shirts were everywhere today! Twelve teams (including Stephen Whitburn and Todd Gloria who would both like to be Hillcrest’s next city Mary Lou Diamond, family and friends at the Hillcrest Centennial clean-up, July 14, 2007councilmember) and almost 70 volunteers set out from two different locations and cleaned up the sidewalks, alleys and gutter of Hillcrest this morning. Flexcar donated the use of a truck, and the clean teams collected trash from all over the area. A full dumpster of junk was removed. Thanks to everyone for pitching in! Please help keep it this way.

Big thanks to the Hillcrest Centennial, City Councilwoman Toni Atkins, SDG&E, City Deli, Big City Bagel, Flexcar and the Hillcrest Town Council for sponsoring this event to spruce up Hillcrest and to Urban Mo’s for hosting the after party. Here’s a little slideshow.
The next quarterly clean-up will be in October.

Everyone who pitches in to help sweep neighborhood streets, will receive a
free t-shirt and a greater sense of community pride (plus the party). Join other friends and neighbors make our community look better! Hillcrest Town Council meeting

July’s Hillcrest Town Council meeting
Over 40 residents attended July’s HCT meeting Tuesday evening. Action items receiving unanimously approval were (1) to join Councilwoman Toni Atkins for the unveiling of a sign at Fifth & Upas (first of seven) on Thursday, July 26 at 10am which will designate Hillcrest’s boundaries and (2) giving thumbs up to an agenda of guest speakers for upcoming meetings — including Lori Saldaña (Aug 14), Mike Aguirre (Sept 11), city council candidate forum (Oct 9) and Chris Kehoe (Nov 12). Tom Mullaney, Friends of San Diego, updated the HTC on the legal challenge against the 301 University project (call 795-1753 to help). Government reps Todd Gloria (Susan Davis), Jeffery Tom (Toni Atkins) and Gary Rotto (Ron Roberts) updated the group on several issues, and Alex Sachs with the City Attorney’s office talked about Mike Aguirre’s proposal re: community planning groups.

Tim Gahagan, chair of the HTC litter committee provided information about this Saturday’s Centennial Cleanup. T-shirts were passed out to volunteers who committed to being there. Ann Garwood kicked off the Centennial Scavenger Quest, outlining the challenge to gather 100 pieces of information and items from throughout our community before noon on Thursday, August 2nd when the community will celebrate our 100th birthday with a noon cake cutting and evening neighborhood social. Warren Simon, Executive Director of the Hillcrest Business Improvement Association explained the role of the HBIA in the community and answered questions from the audience. The next meeting will be Tuesday, August 14, from 6:30-8pm at the Joyce Beers Community Center. Hope you will join us!

“We’re here to inform parents, to warn them about what’s happening inside (the ballpark). Bringing together homosexuals with baseball and kids is beyond bounds. We’re trying to get people to turn around, not go to the game, and we’re succeeding.”
— Self-described Christian activist James Hartline who directed the protest (fyi: it was a near sell-out)

James Hartline responds to HillQuest’s July 9th top quote...
Normally, I don’t have the time to respond to everything that the press writes about me. However, you have placed a false comment on your website that is not an accurate statement from me. I have ordered Scott LaFee of the Union Tribune to retract the quote from his article as it is highly inaccurate. I did not state the words in the U.T. that he wrote me saying. He was one of at least eight interviews that I granted reporters. And I gave them all the exact same statments and Mr. LaFee is the only one that inaccurately quoted me. He was very quickly writing down what I was saying and clearly and incorrectly transcribed my statements. I specifically stated that our problem was the Gay Pride organization and its history of hiring registered sex offenders, pedophiles and promoting pornography, that is what should not be allowed inside of Petco Park around kids. Everything else was misquoted and miswritten by LaFee of the U.T.
Sincerely, James Hartline

Philly at 2007's Hop in the ’Hood

Philly at the Hop!

Friends at this year’s Hop in the ’hood enjoyed a Sunday party as swing dancers hopped and bopped to Sue Palmer’s boogie piano and other great bands. The Flower Power Parade had a bunch of great floral floats, but  Philly (shown basking in his glory) and his dads Richard and Mike stole the show. Check out a slideshow of yesterday’s fun. Pick up your new copy of HillQuest, an Urban Guide to Hillcrest and Beyond! at one of our many advertisers.
