Are you ready for a parade?
SD’s biggest parade kicks off from University Avenue (at Normal) today at 11am with a mile-long route (map) lined with 150,000+ spectators. Over 300 entries will represent the LGBT community’s diversity. The parade proceeds west to Sixth before turning south toward Balboa Park, site of the 2-day festival.
Tip: The parade staging area is along Normal Street. Arrive mid-morning and bring your camera!
Parking — Get here early! If you’re going to make a day of it and attend the festival, leave your vehicle near Marston Point. Walk back to your spot along the parade route while you’re fresh, and it’s still cool. Bring folding chairs to stake out your viewing area, then breakfast at a neighborhood eatery.
Tip: You may also park near the old Navy Hospital east of Park Boulevard in Balboa Park where (from 7-11am) free shuttles will transport you to the Hillcrest staging area. Return trips wil run until 2pm.
Viewing —Sixth Avenue (south of Robinson) is usually not as packed as the rest of the route. Do you want to stand for three hours?  If not, stake out a piece of curb with a blanket. New in 2007: Additional reviewing stands will be located throughout the route. Don’t forget sunscreen, water and money.
Tip: At the end of the parade follow the masses to the festival grounds. That blankie will come in handy on the grassy slopes. Or you may want to postpone the festival ‘til Sunday when it’s not as crowded.

Hillcrest Centennial walking tour, July 18, 2007

Hillcrest Centennial Walks Continue

A group of walkers wanting to learn a little neighborhood history and while enjoying a beautiful summer evening stroll met up last night at 6pm in front of Urban Grind for a guided tour of Hillcrest led by Urban Safaris Patty Fares. The hour and a half stroll was educational, fun, healthy and ended at 7:30 under the Hillcrest sign. Two more walks will be held on Wednesday evenings July 25th or August 1st. Please join us. Your $10 donation will benefit the Hillcrest Centennial.

Vermont Street Pedestrian Bridge is rededicated
Blue balloons lined the popular footbridge that connects Hillcrest and University Heights on Tuesday evening as neighbors ate cake. Supervisor Ron Roberts and Jeffery Tom (for Councilmember Toni Atkins) were thanked for their efforts in securing the funds to renovate the span over Washington Street. A driver had damaged the bollard at the southern entrance, and the University Heights Community Association took the initiative to fix it. Greg Sorini, president of University Heights Community Association, emceed the evening’s presentation and acknowledged those responsible for making it happen including Rhett Butler and Steve Satz. Job well done!

Elaine Graybill and friends at Stonewall Pride Awards

Spirit of Stonewall Awards Honors Community Activism

The sandy rooftop of downtown’s W Hotel was the Monday evening venue for presentations of San Diego’s LGBT Pride Stonewall awards. Elaine Graybill (in the Easter bonnet) is surrounded by friends after receiving this year’s Community Service Award. The Coronado resident and long-time Pride volunteer is an event-planner and community fundraiser. Other honorees included Bruce Abrams who has been named the 2007 Grand Marshal; Stonewall Patrol co-founders Bob Lehman & Tom Felkner are this year’s Champions of Pride; and Scouting for All’s Mick Rabin was honored as Friend of the Year. Look for them in Saturday’s Pride parade.
