Happy Valentine’s Day

QuackRecuse yourself, Scalia
Antonin Scalia
Balboa Park Protest

Demonstrators including the Old Women’s Project, gathered yesterday evening for an event at the Prado Ballroom with signs, duck callers and strong lungs to “quack” against this Supreme Court Justice’s failure to recuse himself from a case connected to his longtime hunter buddy, Dick Cheney. It’s a quagmire for these duck killers.

Madeline Albright Madeleine & her book
“It’s nice to be feared by your enemies, but if you’re feared by your friends, it’s not particularly useful. The effect of it is very damaging to us.

Madeleine Albright highlighted a foreign policy discussion with two UCSD international affairs experts Friday afternoon on the La Jolla campus. Susan Shirk, professor of Political Science (she also worked with Secretary of State Albright during the Clinton administration) and Jeffrey Davidow, Institute of the Americas president, shared the stage in the crowded auditorium. Secretary Albright was the top US diplomat for the four years of the second Clinton Administration. She was the first female secretary of state and the highest-ranking woman in the history of the US government. Prior to her appointment she had been the US Ambassador to the United Nations and served in high-ranking positions in foreign relations on Capitol Hill and in the Carter Administration. Lots ’o stuff is happening on University Avenue, here’s a little 411 from the Hillcrest mole: 1421 (aka) Seven, formerly known as Montana’s [and decades earlier Clint Johnson’s Show Biz and Bee Jay’s] will be changing the signage again soon. But they’re planning a big Valentine’s Day bash as a final bow from of the neighborhood. You may want to consider making reservations. When the doors open again, the name will be Margarita Mary’s (an offshoot of Chris Shaw’s busy burger bar a few blocks west). Next door at 1417 the former Bombay Express will reopen its doors soon as Mama Testa’s Taqueria. We’re also giddy to report that waiting time at 1236 Ono Sushi will get shorter since they’re adding more seating with an outside patio in the back. Across the street, the old hookah smoking lounge at 1277 has been tranformed into a Mediterranean restaurant and is now open. At 1060 Wherehouse is “officially” closing (actually the sign on their door says “closing January 24th”), but they’re still open today. Maybe they need a 2004 calendar. Also, at 1281 Sahara Designs now offers exotic furnishings. In the same block 1243 Wine Steals is good to their name as they offer up great fruit of the grape at quite reasonable prices! Say “hi” to owners Ken and Mike behind the bar.

sue palmer trio

This fabulous trio (Deejah Marie, Sue Palmer and Sharon Shufelt) transformed North Park’s Caffe Calabria into the Sue Palmer Supper Club tonight (and every Wednesday evening from 6-8pm.) Enjoy a light meal or your favorite coffee drink with the toe-tapping tunes. Want wine? BYOB.

As sexual identities expand, so do “queer” names.
Here’s a guide to the complicated lexicon now on the horizon.

Bamboo

Welcome to Exotic Bamboo Nursery at 1483 University Avenue (next to Rooster Gear’s first Hillcrest location) between Herbert and Richmond. The owner, a LA schoolteacher in a previous life, will soon open this tranquil tea emporium with an outside garden area filled with 175 different varieties of bamboo...and one resident tuxedo cat, appropriately named “Bamboo.”

Stop in and say “meow.”
