“A landmark downtown library may have been
a dream 30 years ago, but it is now a wasteful, inefficient, outmoded
nightmare.” — Alice Goldfarb Marquis in today’s letters to the editor of the Union-Tribune

![]() John Chandler’s Peace — Please pass it on As you stroll through Hillcrest and surrounding areas, you might run across a different kind of peace sign. University Heights artist John Chandler has been creating and distributing peace talismans as public art for seven years. John’s concept is twofold. The first part is spreading peace through the energetic power of the word itself. Collectively we have the power to create a peaceful planet through positive thoughts and deeds. Seeing the word peace in an unexpected place will bring the thought to the forefront of our minds, and positively impact our actions and interactions. The second aim of the peace project is to promote peace with one another. Open yourself to reconnect with someone; be willing to forgive and to take the first step toward reconciliation. Look for peace within yourself and grow toward a more compassionate existence. This year John’s peace talismans are in brick form. Distribution began around the community in December and will continue throughout January. Check out John’s web site (chandlerspiritworks.com) for location clues. Help create peace. |

Head on down to the embarcadero Thursday morning for the 17th annual Port of San Diego Big Bay Balloon Parade. This year’s theme is “Groovin’ to the 70s” and spectators and participants alike will be dancin’ and jivin’ to the festivities. With over 100,000 street-side spectators parking a car will be a nightmare. 92103 residents may want to consider riding a bike or leave the four wheels in Old Town, and jump on the trolley for a short ride to the middle of the action in Little Italy. As always, this exciting family event brings together world-class marching bands, magnificent floats, entertaining drill teams, the 12th annual Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals (the dachshund race will be held 9:30am), followed by the Bumble Bee Foods 5K run...then the procession of enormous balloons kicks off at 10am! Get there early and watch the setup! — unfortunately...six of the 25 big balloons didn’t
have any helium —

“I really don’t understand it. I would have thought that more people
would have thought that was improper. But I don’t know if that’s the
way things have been done around here for a long time.” — Mayor Jerry Sanders at the

Merry Christmas from Big DaddyThe owners of Babbo Grande (aka Big Daddy) served up a holiday luncheon feast for all their employees yesterday at the former Crepes de Paris. The eatery is now offering an Italian flair of fritattas and salsa, along with their well known crepes. New menu items will be added soon.Stop by this friendly family restaurant at 1731 University Avenue (just west of Park Boulevard) and say hi to Carmen, Mike and Michael. If you mention HillQuest with your crepes, you’ll get a free cup of coffee! |
