HillQuest, an Urban Guide cover #6

HillQuest #5
HillQuest’s sixth edition will begin distribution the end of June. Packed with new goodies about University Heights, volunteers groups, pioneers, history, an update on development projects throughout the neighborhood and more. Only a few weeks remain to pick up a copy of HQ5 before they will be replaced with the 2008-2009 handy little guide to Hillcrest and beyond. Stop by one of
our advertisers to grab one before they’re gone.

Fold-out maps in this year’s HillQuest will feature three self-guided walks through Hillcrest and Bankers Hill. One in the book and two posted in the recreation chapter online.

“If we had done all the things that the mayor said he was going to do when he came into office, we wouldn’t be in this situation today where we have a disgruntled work force and potentially a strike.”

May 13, 2008 Hillcrest Town Council Meeting
Candidates address the HTC
Over 75 neighbors attended Tuesday night’s Hillcrest Town Council (HTC) meeting to query those running in the June 3rd primary election. Council District 3 candidates Todd Gloria, Stephen Whitburn, James Hartline and Robert E. Lee, US congressional candidate Steve Copas, a rep for Yes on props A, B & C and mayoral candidate Steve Francis all spoke to a receptive Hillcrest audience.

Barry Hager, spokesperson for the Interim Height Ordinance updated the crowd and encouraged residents to attend city council when the ordinance is heard. (We are still awaiting the date). Barry explained that this has now been a two-year process, and the community must continue to press city council members to pass the ordinance as originally written with a firm height limit north of Upas. A vote of the HTC confirmed unanimous support. Postcards are available to mail to City Hall urging support of the ordinance. Anyone interested in obtaining the postcards, call (619) 260-1929. Fill out your pack of nine cards and take them to your next meal at the Crest Cafe, and they will stamp and mail them for you.

“Since the mayor is the manager in charge of all city management and departments, allowing any mayor to appoint the person who will audit the city departments is like having the fox guard the henhouse. ”
