“(Mary and Bill Peccolo) were pretty forward-thinking folks. They knew they wanted to open a bookstore and they wanted an arthouse feel, they were on the cutting edge. The bookstore was the soul of Hillcrest.”
— Michael Borrelli remembering his aunt Mary Peccolo, original owner of Blue Door Bookstore

Post-pride cleanup, July 21, 2008

Thanks for cleaning up Hillcrest

Orange t-shirted volunteers swept trash from gay pride parade route and the surrounding area making the Hillcrest Town Council’s first fundraiser a great success. Dozens of volunteers pitched in yesterday morning to put the shine back on the neighborhood after this past weekend’s festivites. Pride is donating $10 to the Hillcrest Town Council for each volunteer hour that was invested...adding up to nearly $1,000 for the residents’ group. (The HTC’s next meeting will be Tuesday, August 12th at Joyce Beers Community Center.) A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who gave up your Monday mornings to help make a difference.

Kathy Griffin performing at San Diego Pride, July 20, 2008

San Diego loves Kathy Griffin

The D-list diva packed the house for the closing evening of this year’s LGBT Pride in Balboa Park. The appreciative crowd went crazy for the foul-mouthed comedian who topped the 34th annual celebration that drew over 150,000 spectators and participants to the parade and two-day festival where reports of celebrity sightings included party girls Lindsay Lohan and her gal pal, Samantha Ronson.

Dykes on Bikes #4 in San Diego’s LGBT Pride Parade

Weekend Pride: Live...Love...Be

The nation’s seventh largest LGBT Pride parade kicked off at 11am from University Avenue and Normal Street this morning.
The parade traveled west to Sixth Avenue, then south to Upas. People began lining the streets early on the cool gray Saturday.

As a surprise to the crowd, Dykes on Bikes stopped their motorcycles to hand out letters of protest toward
Pride executive Director Ron deHarte who replaced their traditional place of honor leading the annual procession to an upsetting fourth slot, as well as adding a list of other requirements. DeHarte began this year’s parade with “marchers for those who can’t” to remind us all of the oppression and atrocities of gays around the world, followed by activist Peter Tatchell and two Metropolitan Police “pace cars.” A two-day festival is underway in Balboa Park.
