“The Dykes on Bikes leading our parades
sent a message to the world that we were not to be fucked with...the
traditional gay community was not something that was easy to create. It
is, however, something that will be all too easy to destroy.” — Hillcrest resident Andrew Towne
in this
week’s letters to the GLT editor

Another great summer night on the roof Thanks to Whole Foods Market, the Uptown Sunrise Rotary and the Hillcrest History Guild for sponsoring last night’s free movie under the Hillcrest stars. The market grilled for those who didn’t bring picnics, and free snacks/frozen fruit bars were handed out to the appreciative crowd who enjoyed a beautiful evening with an award-winning film. Please let us
know your suggestions for the next title.

Sign says closed ’til 8/14, city says more The closure of Sixth Avenue between Upas and Pennsylvania was initially anticipated to occur between July 21-29 for a sewer project. However the contractor ran into difficulties, and the road will be closed for an additional month to complete the installation of a junction structure. Last week, soil sloughing occurred during the drilling operation at elevation 1-12 feet in an area close to a gas line. As a result the excavated area may grow wider to take more than half of the road. Since the site condition has created some concern, the contractor is evaluating other options and has requested keeping the road closed until the junction structure is safely in place. Be patient. |

“The city of San Diego rushed to hire
contractors to help homeowners in Rancho Bernardo clear their lots
after the firestorms of 2007. It turned out to be an expensive venture for
taxpayers, who will cover what private insurance doesn’t.” — Watchdog report, “After the
Fires” — the lead story in today’s Union-Tribune

“Until the city declares a moratorium on
new residential development, all our conservation means nothing. So why
not be fair and make the developers feel the pain also? Until then, all the water we save will go to those new developments. So why bother to save?” — C. A. Kozik in today’s letters
to the U-T editor

Get used to Sixth Avenue being closed To some it’s a hassle, but many residents are enjoying having four lanes of empty asphalt as a gateway to and from Balboa Park. “It’s sooo much easier to ride a bike or jog,” said one happy Hillcrester. The city’s notice explained that on July 21 the street would be closed for eight days to relocate or replace several sewer manholes and the installation of over 1,000 feet of new sewer main. Last week the “closed” date was moved forward to August 4, and yesterday it was again changed to August 14. So...who knows. Be patient. It will be closed for at least another two weeks. In the meantime, try to avoid Pennsylvania, especially during peak traveling times. |
