“All around the world women stand in silent vigil, wearing black, as a symbol of mourning for the ravages of war.”

On the eve of the one-year anniversary of the Iraqi invasion women dressed in black held a candlelight vigil at dusk in front of the warship aircraft carrier USS Midway in downtown San Diego. Each of the luminaria candles was lit in memory of 250 lives lost in the past year of fighting in Iraq. Most were women. 40 brown sacks remembered the lives of 10,000 Iraqis. Two small bags were lit in memory of the nearly 500 Americans who have lost their lives in the war based on lies.

Protesters gathered Thursday evening in the front of the San Diego County Administration Building to support full and equal marriage for all individuals. At right, local attorney and LGBT Center boardmember, M.E. Stephens rallies the crowd of activists to continue their involvement in opposition to a federal constitutional amendment that would ban such marriages. “We’re just starting to make our voices heard in San Diego,” said Paula Rosenstein, a San Diego board member of Equality California (EQCA). “We want to have our equal rights as much as anyone else in the state.”
