Maple Canyon clean-up this Saturday morningJoin REI Chula Vista and the City of SD Open Space Canyons
program to help restore Maple Canyon’s native habitat. This project
will include the removal of trash and a highly invasive non-native weed
called “arundo” which displaces native plants and associated wildlife
species because of the massive stands it forms in stream channels. You
don’t need any special skills to volunteer — only a willingness to
learn, work hard and get your hands dirty! We will provide work gloves and tools. Meet at the corner of Third Avenue & Quince Street on the west end of the Quince Street Pedestrian Bridge for a project orientation. Call Ranger Jason Allen at (619) 235-5262 for more information. |

![]() Saturday protest for equal rights for all Grassroots community organizers across the country will join in a national protest against Proposition 8. “Join the Impact” has organized these rallies to happen simultaneously at 10:30am here and 1pm on the east coast as “one loud voice to be heard across the nation.” It is estimated that over 250,000 people will participate in rallies and marches in over 100 cities in the US and internationally. San Diego will be participating with two coordinated events. #1 protest march that will start at Sixth & Upas in Balboa Park (meet up at 10am). After marching through downtown, it will end at the County Administration Building. #2 rally held there on the lawn at 1pm. Speakers will spread a message of hope and equality while discussing the fight against Proposition 8 andwhat can be done to ensure equal rights for everyone. The protest will be peaceful & positive. The San Diego event will be one of the largest in the nation and receive a lot of media attention. Organizers are expecting 20,000 people. Anyone who supports equality is encouraged to attend and support the event. We encourage family, neighbors, co-workers, friends and all to join us. Anyone who cares about individual rights should be very concerned about the passage of Proposition 8. For more details, please contact Nicholas Moede (619) 988-2626 or email EqualitySD@gmail.com to volunteer. |

“There does not seem to be any kind of
rational as to why these cuts were chosen. Was a there a prioritization? What criteria did they
use? It just seems to be random.”

New Hillcrest hotel unveiled Over 60 residents attended tonight’s monthly meeting of the Hillcrest Town Council. La Jolla Pacific Development partner, Michael McPhee, unveiled the latest proposal for 301 University — a boutique hotel to be operated by a professional hotel management company such as Kimpton or Joie de Vivre. The proposed building would be 72 feet tall with a corner architectural element of 80 feet. The hotel will have 150 rooms, a spa, lap pool, banquet rooms and a roof top bar, 170 parking spaces and 100-130 employees. Limited public parking may be available depending on occupancy. The developer explained that the Interim Height Ordinance does not govern their building’s height because it is grandfathered under the old 301 University filing with the City of San Diego. Some in the audience disagreed. (catch a rerun tonight evening in UH). HTC Development committee member Roy Dahl made a presentation outlining suggested design principles for our neighborhood. The goal reflects wishes of the residents as we begin updating our community plan. Seven main points: adequate parking, abundant landscaping, bulk & scale appropriate with neighboring structures, effective use of materials & color, sufficient setbacks, green development and appropriate height as a defining feature. “This struggle is all about love and our
freedom to love. We do not need a piece of paper to validate our love. We
need it to prove we’re equal to and as good as everyone else. In
this crowd, there’s one thing that’s absent, and that is hate. I see a
lot of anger, but no hate. We must keep things positive and peaceful.” — Hillcrest business owner and
community activist Nick Moede

| Sunday, November 9, 2008 | “If Jesus were here, and you gave him $75
million, would he use it to help prevent same-sex marriage, or would he
use it to help feed and provide shelter for the needy? The ‘religious’
right really needs to re-evaluate its priorities.” — Jon Hansen in today’s U-T letters re: the gay marriage debate
