The beautiful Julianne will happily serve you lunch at Hillcrest’s newest hot spot — Chef Lau’s at 3739 Sixth Avenue. Hungry folks have been lined up outside the door on some nights as they wait for the talented owner’s tea-smoked chicken, handmade dumplings and fabulous vegetarian dishes.

Also worth noting are their tea-marbled eggs, firecracker
calamari and the yummy Vietnamese summer rolls.
Don’t take our word for it. Stop on by!

What did Madeleine say today?
Monday, March 29 Ruben (the a.m. cutie from Fox 6) was in Hillcrest this morning at the new JBX (seen here with their Marketing Director Terry Graham). Jack’s yummy new menu is up... but you can still get two tacos for 99¢. We can report that the sunrise pannido is quite tasty! Here’s a review from Fahrenheit and another one from City Beat.

The White House has told the independent panel investigating the attacks of September 11, 2001, that Condoleezza Rice, President Bush’s national security adviser, wants another private meeting with the commission.

Avila Beach
, just north of Pismo and south of San Luis Obispo, reminded us of a quiet (and tiny) OB.

Okay, here’s another great character from our neighborhood’s history...
Larry “Lair” Davis (former editor of Update, the Gayzette, GLTimes and the GLN [Gay & Lesbian Nation] — all but Update were based in Hillcrest) is hanging out across from the Santa Cruz Boardwalk, as he wraps up his second year as the Communications and Development Director of the Land Trust of Santa Cruz County. He will be corresponding from Central America soon as he enters retirement (aka the next chapter of his life’s adventure). Lair resided in several cozy Hillcrest apartments (above where Buffalo Breath is now located; the new condos at Washington and Eighth, when they were affordable; Spruce Street Apartment building across from The Caliph) in through the 1980s and 1990s.

Remember Kate Beck and those cute little dimples? The Apt’s queen of the open mic is alive, wild and managing a kewl art and frame-o-rama shop in the heart of Berkeley. As a sweet singer, songwriter and emcee extraordinare, Katie added ambiance to Hillcrest in the 1980-90s before moving to the bay area a dozen years ago. Let us know if you’d like her email address.
