What would Harvey do?

Under gray San Diego skies, approximately two hundred union and LGBT activists convened beneath the palms in front of Doug Manchester’s downtown Hyatt hotel.

Scheduled to speak to the International Franchise Association, convened at the hotel, yesterday afternoon was former-President Bill Clinton. (Shown protesting above with “thumbs down to Manchester” are local activists Alex Sachs and Bob Leyh.) Bill crossed a union-sanctioned picket line (although he may have tried to change the location) and faced a crowd of LGBT protesters who were angered by the hotel owner, Doug Manchester’s, contribution of $125,000 toward the passage of California’s Prop. 8 which eliminated marriage equality in our state....

Which Wich? opens in Hillcrest
Featuring 51 varieties of tasty, customizable toasted “wiches,” a unique new Hillcrest eatery has arrived. Customers place orders by using red Sharpies on pre-printed menus on numbered sandwich bags.

Customers pick a sandwich (each $5.25) then select the bread, cheese and additional ingredients to make a unique creation. They also sell hand-dipped shakes and freshly-baked cookies (mention HillQuest when you order to get one for FREE...deal). Stop by 3825 Fifth Avenue in the old Guild Theatre location and welcome them to the neighborhood. California’s first Which Wich? opened at 9am today (since they also fix yummy breakfast “wiches”).

Aida Mancias

Rest in peace, Aida
A favorite Hillcrest resident and one of the award winning designers who created the Vermont Street Bridge public art, Aida Mancillas passed away last Tuesday. A celebration of her unique fabulousness will be held one week from today (Tuesday, February 17th) at 3pm in St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral (Fifth & Nutmeg)...followed by a reception in the Great Hall featuring light refreshments, music and art.

Hear ye, hear ye, residents of Greater Hillcrest*

> Town Council meeting this Tuesday

All renters and home owners of Hillcrest and the surrounding area (*east to Florida, south to Laurel, west to Goldfinch and north to the Mission Valley Canyon edge or Meade Avenue in Joyce Beer Community CenterUniversity Heights) are encouraged to attend Tuesday evening’s meeting of the Hillcrest Town Council from 6:30-8pm at the Joyce Beers Community Center in the Uptown District (Vermont Street just north of Cleveland between Terra and Aladdin restaurants).

Come for the free coffee and cookies while joining neighbors in making Hillcrest even better. This month’s agenda items include introductions, public comments, reports from government representatives, a short presentation by the HBIA’s director Ben Nicholls and nominations for next month’s board elections. An update of the neighborhood’s community plan for Uptown will also be discussed. Everyone is welcome.
