February 21, 2009 Uptown Partnership Hillcrest parking workshop
Uptown Partnership’s hosts workshop

Everyone was invited, but too few people attended,  this morning’s public workshop from 10-11:30am in the auditorium of Florence Elementary School, 3914 First Ave
nue. Unfortunately it was scheduled at the same time as the district-wide forum about the city’s budget problems.

The Partnership workshop presented three ideas for confronting parking issues in Hillcrest: a parking lot validation program, a low-cost shuttle system and a universal valet system. Executive Director Carol Schultz (above) reviewed the results of a recent business survey on  three different tables, and the group was allowed to make suggestions. Goals for the workshop included....Identifying specific projects to relieve area problems; estimating project costs and funding sources; and implementing a service that facilitates parking by customers who patronize the central Hillcrest business area during peak hours of the day. One participant suggested outreaching through a survey for these customers’ opinions.

Sculpture in Balboa Park

Great News re: the Robinson Avenue bridge

Courtney Thomson, Council Representative for District 3 Councilmember Todd Gloria, has shared the great news that the Robinson Avenue bridge (built in 1942 over what is now Highway 163) will be repainted in the next month. The wooden bridge has been in poor shape needing a good scraping and a coat of paint for several years. “I just received the news from Streets Division that the Robinson Avenue Bridge will be painted in the next 30 days. Yeah!” exclaimed Courtney in an email to the community.

Thanks to Todd’s office for investing the time and energy into helping Hillcrest remain one of the ten great neighborhoods in America.

Aida Mancillas

Rest in peace, Aida

Human beings are meaning makers. Artists haven’t forgotten that about themselves, and they haven’t allowed anything or anyone to beat it out of them. And life certainly does try to get you to stop. I’m lucky; I’ve passed the point where the beating works so I’m freed up to go on my own way. I’m following a creative path because life is strong and demanding and art makes it more than something to be tolerated. Art gets you to see why and how it is magnificent and empowering and your birthright.
The artist is an important contributor to society because we help people to find the feast. It’s our role, and it’s an important one. We’re not entertainers, although some of what we do will entertain. We’re not gadflies, although some of our work will prod and poke. We’re not decorators, although some of our work will dazzle with its skill.
We are meaning shapers in a world that desperately needs us, regardless of what is spent on us per capita. Personally speaking, there isn’t a bank big enough to hold the amount of money that we artists are worth. I can’t be sidetracked by measuring out my worth in a system designed by bean counters for bean counters. I’ll take my measure some other way.

Koi in the Japanese Friendship Garden

Ready for another free admission Tuesday in Balboa Park?

Every week Balboa Park museums open their doors for us to explore. Today is the third Tuesday. So this week — the San Diego Art Institute, the Museum of Man, the Mingei International Museum, the Japanese Friendship Garden & the San Diego Museum of Art are FREE to enjoy. The Timken Museum of Art is always free. Take advantage of this great opportunity to acquaint yourself with the wonderful gems in our big backyard and still have money in your pocket for a great Hillcrest lunch.

The free day was created as a “thank you” to local residents for supporting these museums through tax dollars.

Enjoy!
