“This is just like 2006 when they complained that the hedge fund Amaranth was secretive and misleading about how they deployed the county's pension investment. Sheesh. Complaining about a hedge fund being secretive is like complaining about an anchovy being salty. Come on! You know that they’re salty when you buy them.”

Arrest in Balboa Park

Park West & Bankers Hill public safety meeting held
Over 60 neighbors from the Bankers Hill/Park West area met at the Park Manor Suites Hotel this evening to learn more about public safety and law enforcement in the neighborhood. The interactive meeting was organized by Janet Fairbanks, Jim Frost, Bruce Dammann and Alyssa Wolven who all live on Sixth Avenue. Guest speakers included Balboa Park Senior Ranger Casey Smith, City Attorney Danielle Stroud and an officer from the SDPD. Neighbors are encouraged to report any crime in process to 9-1-1 and non emergency events to the police non-emergency line 531-2000.

Residents were informed of a “tagger crew” that has been in the Bankers Hill/Hillcrest area during the past couple of weeks creating an increase in graffiti. SDPD encourages neighbors to take a picture of the graffiti, then paint over it and send the picture to the police. Once arrested, taggers will be prosecuted for each incident. The audience was also encouraged to report any activity that is considered a detriment to their quality of life including urinating in public, panhandling or sleeping in doorways. Neighbors are encouraged to contact (619) 675-1978 or email BPWAG@cox.net to receive information about future meetings.

“What is required now is for this country to pull together, confront boldly the challenges we face, and take responsibility for our future once more. [A] day of reckoning has arrived, and the time to take charge of our future is here. Now is the time to act boldly and wisely — to not only revive this economy, but to build a new foundation for lasting prosperity.”

Hillcrest Mardi Gras 2009

Hillcrest Mardi Gras dancer& the good times rolled...
The largest crowd of revelers in Hillcrest Mardi Gras history filled University Avenue last night as they celebrated a beautiful Fat Tuesday evening at the annual neighborhood party (here’s a slideshow). Excitement was in the air as friends (old and new) ate, drank and collected beads. Tickets sold out. Tootie and the Lips Girls entertained throughout the night along with Candye Kane & Sue Palmer, Il Circo street performers and the Bugs. All the proceeds from the event will support community improvements through the Hillcrest Business Association and scholarships through the GSDBA Charitable Foundation.

“I think (Harvey Milk ) would want me to say to all of the gay and lesbian kids out there tonight who have been told that they are less than by their churches, by the government or by their families, that you are beautiful, wonderful creatures of value and that no matter what anyone tells you, God does love you and that very soon, I promise you, you will have equal rights federally, across this great nation of ours.”

“I feel strongly that you don’t impair this site, which is about a diagonal block from the Civic Center. With every use downtown, we need to accomplish as many things as we can.”
— CCDC’s Jennifer LeSar (Toni Atkins’ wife) who wants a high-rise instead of a two-story senior center
