US national security adviser Condoleezza Rice is at the center of a storm as she testified today before the 911 commission in an attempt to counter bombshell charges that President Bush failed to make terrorism an urgent priority before that date. Also of interest is the content of the aborted speech Rice was to give on 9/11/01 which promoted missile defense as the cornerstone of the Bush administration’s national security policy.

Ivo Daalder, a foreign policy analyst at the Brookings Institution doubted the Bush administration would be able to find any reference to al Qaeda or Osama bin Laden by any top officials in the months before September 11. The Rice speech, he said, “is just the final cherry on the pudding proving that what these people were concerned about was not al Qaeda or Osama bin Laden but madmen with missiles.”
or maybe this is the “cherry”         FDR historic photo helped.     her predicament...
MoveOn.org’s political action committee debuted a new anti-Bush ad yesterday.
Before 9/11 I was obsessed with Iraq. Then I used 9/11 as an excuse to invade Iraq. So now we’re less safe than we were before.

JBX continues to be a lively topic of conversation. Have you been? It’s the inaugural site of the reconstruction of San Diego’s first big drive-thru fast-food chain: Jack in the Box. One wishes the opening of independent stores in the neighborhood could gain as much media attention. Nonetheless, this latest re-invention of fast food is quite tasty. The exterior architecture lays a post-modern industrial cladding on the traditional white box. Signage is minimal with merely a bold JBX on the building itself and Jack’s image etched in the industrial sheet metal hanging over the drive-up window. The interior resembles a Seattle coffee-shop (can you say cozy?)  — smaller may be in, but it sure’s difficult to navigate a wheelchair in there now. Their burgers are still available, but they’re upscale menu offerings with a gourmet touch, larger buns and fresher vegetables. These are definitely some yummy drive-thru eats, but don’t call this “fast food” — their service continues to lag as their one BIG negative.

Hillcrest Hardware Needs YOUR Family Photo

Be a part of Bruce Reeves’ next award winning storefront window and participate in a display of community family images that have propelled President Bush into a domestic war against gay marriages. Hillcrest Ace Hardware is displaying photos of the love, commitment, togetherness and families that the Bush administration will be discriminating against if his ilk is successful in passing an amendment to the Constitution banning same-sex marriage. Many families have already sent in their photos which are being use as a backdrop for a transparent copy of the United States Constitution.

Want to be a part of of the Hillcrest Hardware window display? Send your digital photo to bruce@hillcresthardware.com this weekend.

$8 margarita, $6 hot dog, $5 soda, $3.50 cotton candy...Play Ball.                   A-Z guide to Petco
The Padres have taken the field at Petco Park and lost their first game. Starter David Wells threw back-to-back homerun pitches to the Seattle Mariners in the fourth inning, and the hometown boys never again saw the lead. Oh, well...it’s a purty ballpark.
                                                                                                                     Now where’s that library?!?

Recognize this local officer from 1990?

It’s Hillcrest’s own favorite cop, Rick Edgil, who was the second member of San Diego Police Department to come out of the closet (following 10-year veteran John Graham) over a decade ago. Officer Rick is now
SDPD’s Community Relations Officer and attends all of the Hillcrest Business Association meetings at the Joyce Beers Community Center in the Uptown District (5:00pm the second Tuesday of each month).

Happy 21st Birthday to Flicks and owners Joe Letzcus & Nigel Mayer

Larry Gillis would be proud!

Thursday night was also last call for a really special guy. Everyone’s friend, Joe Ferrelli (Flick’s original video jockey) ended decades of service at the popular Hillcrest hangout before leaving town today for the Big Apple.
Best of luck to Joe and his handsome husband, Tom. We’ll miss you.

Two-tone, break a leg on your next production!!
