Beth Grant’s “Big Ruby"

Corenlia at the Old Globe May 16-June 21

The audacious and vivacious Beth Grant as “Ruby” and Melinda Page Hamilton as “Cornelia” in the Old Globe’s world premiere production of Cornelia by Mark V. Olsen, directed by Ethan McSweeny, playing in the Globe’s Arena Theatre at the San Diego Museum of Art’s James S. Copley Auditorium May 16 – June 21

Beth Grant (who played the role of “Sissy Hickey” in Sordid Lives) has created another memorable character, “Big Ruby” Folsom, former first lady of Alabama and mother of Cornelia, George Wallace’s second wife. She gives George hell and has a good time doing it! Don’t miss it.

FYI: There’s also a special “Out in San Diego” performance with a pre-show cocktail party on Thursday, May 28th. Tickets to that event or to see Cornelia may be purchased at the Box Office, in person, over the phone at 619-23-GLOBE.

“We all grow as we get older; we learn things, we become more sensitive to people and people’s lives. The more I’ve looked at that, I’ve grown to think differently about how we should live.”

John Nolen’s 1926 plan for a new SD Civic Center

San Diego needs a vision

It has been a century since noted urban planner John Nolen laid out his grand vision for the future of the small town of fewer than 40,000 residents that comprised San Diego. He foresaw a city oriented toward the bay, with prominent public spaces, landscaped boulevards and plentiful parks. Those features, combined with strong public resolve and the right policies, he declared, could make San Diego a world-class city.

The results of his career have been astounding. Exciting bold colors are his trademark. These pure colors are taken from the, rainbow flag and represent health, love, sex, sun, nature, art, harmony and spirit. One of California’s favorite artists, Riccoboni is an innovative American-born painter (California, 1960). Influenced by his early years living in the suburbs of New York City, this self-taught artist, credits encouragement by family and teachers for his drive and inspiration. In 2007 the popular artist moved his Beacon Artworks Gallery to beautiful Fiesta de Reyes in Old Town’s San Diego State Historic Park.

Riccoboni’s paintings on canvas and paper depict his travels and local interest. Subjects include local landscape, cityscape, portraiture, street-scenes, public events and everyday happenings with friends. His palette is derived from the bold colors of the original rainbow flag. These colors represent, sexuality, health, sunshine, nature, art, harmony, and spirit. Riccoboni's internationally recognized work represents community, a sense of place in a positive and life affirming manner.

A fan of architecture, RD Riccoboni is currently working on drawings and paintings of vanishing historic American buildings and landscape. To learn and discover more about the artist and his accomplishments visit his gallery website. “I am asked constantly what drives and inspires me. My answer is usually, forward thinking. Picking up on the positive and beautiful vibrations of color and spirit that surround our daily lives. My hope is they trigger inspiration in you to create and make the world a better place with art whether you are the creator or the appreciation or both,” says Riccoboni.

I like this quote says Riccoboni...“People think I'm disciplined. It is not discipline. It is devotion. There is a great difference.”                                                                                   — Opera singer Luciano Pavarotti, 1935-2007

“I find it sad that community fountains and water features are being targeted during this aquatic and economic drought...(as) city leaders are passing out building permits by the dozens and horrible tract homes and commercial buildings are continuing to rise, even though the demand and the land has been depleted.”

Town Council unanimously rejects mayor’s parking proposal

Staff from the San Diego Uptown News announced the debut of their neighborhood newspaper in June. Representatives from Assemblymember Saldaña and CD3 Gloria’s office reported on the achievements of their bosses.
