Thanks for pitching inA couple dozen volunteers (including Councilman Todd Gloria) made Hillcrest look even better this morning as the Hillcrest Clean T.E.A.M. (Together Everyone Achieves More) removed graffiti from the neighborhood, weeds from the Robinson Avenue Bridge, fliers from poles and trash from the sidewalks and gutters. A little rain didn’t melt us...and everyone came away with a great sense of pride. If you enjoy a cleaner Hillcrest, let the Hillcrest Town Council Neighborhood Improvement Committee (NIC) know. |

Preservationists mark 40 years of great savesForty years ago, a 29-year-old pen-and-ink artist, Robert Miles Parker, hung out a banner on the outside of the Victorian-era house where he was living at First Avenue and Fir Street on the edge of downtown. “Save This House,” it read, because the owners were calling in the bulldozers to build a parking lot. Thus was born the Save Our Heritage Organisation, San Diego's leading historic preservation group. Tomorrow evening, SOHO will honor Parker, who is flying in from his New York City home, with a lifetime achievement award at its 27th annual People in Preservation program held at the end of National Preservation Month. Other PIP (People in Preservation) Awards will include: Town Crier Award: Ann Garwood and Nancy Moors for their “HillQuest” guidebook and this website, HillQuest.com. They are also founders of the Hillcrest History Guild and are restoring an historic apartment house in Bankers Hill. |

HillQuest’s seventh edition just weeks awayThe new HillQuest Urban Guide will begin distribution at advertiser locations the end of June with usual goodies such as community history, pioneers, dining, shopping, fun and maps of our neighborhood. HQ7 will also feature chapters on local characters and North Park. Founding father Alonzo Horton holds the first copy (the map of SD has been missing for years). San Diego’s visionary first sailed into SD Bay on April 15, 1867, and while awaiting a ride to the town center (now Old Town) he strolled up a knoll and envisioned a city beyond the sagebrush. Just as Wm. Heath Davis (17 years earlier), Horton believed for San Diego to prosper, it needed to be located on the harbor, and his land purchase set a new city in motion. |

Thousands march to support equality At 5pm this evening several thousand gay and lesbian marriage supporters gathered at Sixth & Laurel for a rally before marching downtown to the Hall of Justice. Rhythm Turner (right in brown shirt) lead the mass. The popular rocker was a victim of a recent hate crime when she kissed her girlfriend after a gig in Mission Beach. The California Supreme Court deliberated for three months on Prop 8 before ruling in favor of the ban. At issue was whether the amendment was put on the ballot properly, and what would happen to the thousands of gay and lesbian couples who got married legally before the ban was passed. The Supremes ruled the estimated 18,000 gay and lesbian couples will be able to stay married. Advocates are already making plan to return the issue to the ballot box, probably as early as next year. |

“But, whatever the Court decides here two
things are certain to me. The right to marry and therefore have full legal civil
recognition is important, is coming and is just.” — Steve Schulte awaiting this
morning’s decision from the California Supreme Court
