“Our cupcakes are really different. You go to a lot of cupcake stores, you’ll find the classic vanilla, the classic chocolate. We really go out of the way. We have pomegranate, we have pistachio, mango-guava, hazelnut.”

Pottery from the Spanish Village in Balboa Park

Potters Guild to hold sale this weekend

Looking for a unique gift? Members of the San Diego Potters Guild will be holding their biannual sale in Balboa Park on Saturday and Sunday from 10am-4pm. Located in the plaza of the Spanish Village, the sale features thousands of pieces of hand-made ceramics by many of San Diego’s finest potters.

All of the items are one-of-a-kind. Works range from functional ware such as plates, bowls and coffee cups to more decorative and sculptural forms like ceramic shoes, garden lanterns and conch shells. Prices range from a handful of dollars to a few hundred. Spanish Village is located south of the Zoo on Village Place. Sales are conducted twice a year on the second weekend in June and November in the colorful plaza of Spanish Village. This is by far the largest pottery sale in San Diego and is the best time for the general public to see and/or buy what their members make, as well as offering an opportunity to meet the potters in person. For more information please call the Potters Guild at (619) 239-0507.

“Federal auditors concluded last year that many of San Diego’s loans were not managed properly, never paid back and used primarily to help the city capture a greater share of tax revenue from the state, all which violate CDBG guidelines.”

Pride ED Ron deHarte speaking to the Hillcrest Town Council meeting, June 9, 2009

Hillcrest Town Council fills the
Joyce Beers Community Center

Over 60 neighbors and guests attended the June meeting of the Hillcrest Town Council (HTC) on Tuesday night in the warm (get that air conditioning fixed) Joyce Beers Community Center. Ron De Harte, left, director of San Diego LGBT Pride talked about street closures for this year’s parade on Saturday, July 18 and how the communiy would be cleaned-up after the party is over. Government representatives from CD3, State Assemblymember Saldaña, Congresswoman Susan Davis’s office, Supervisor Ron Roberts and the Uptown Partnership presented reports.

Kyrsten Burr-Rosenthal with the SD Water Department talked about the implementation of the Level 2 Water Alert which allows for watering only three days a week. Residents were instructed to water either after 6pm or before 10am. Single family homes with even numbered addresses may water (or wash cars) on Saturday, Monday & Wednesday only; odd number addresses on Sunday, Tuesday & Thursday; condos and apartments are limited to watering landscape, gardens or washing cars only on Monday, Wednesday or Friday.

Bar and club owners Nick Moede (Rich’s & Numbers), Chris Shaw (Urban Mo’s & Baja Betty’s), Alex Marin (Bamboo Lounge) and SDPD officer David Surwillo addressed concerns of noise, litter and unruly behavior of bar patrons by neighbors primarily from Essex Street. The HTC, Hillcrest Business Association, Councilmember Gloria’s office and the bar/club owners will work together towards solutions that include parking at the DMV and Uptown District, posting notices to be respectful of neighbors and litter pick-up.

Big thanks to Babbo Grande restaurant for providing the pasta primavera and garlic bread. The lovely HTC donation hat was passed through the crowd at the end of the meeting, and $63 was collected for incidental expenses. Next month’s neighborhood meeting will be held on Tuesday evening, July 14th from 6:30-8pm.

Balboa Park kiosk

Balboa Park enters the information age

Have you checked out the new electronic informational kiosks designed, installed, and operated by the Friends of Balboa Park? The latest usage statistics show that 100+ people use the popular touch screens on the kiosks each day to find information about Balboa Park.

The kiosk located at the Cascades (near the Bea Evenson Fountain) is the most heavily used. Kiosks are also located in front of the Timken Museum and near the west end of the Cabrillo Bridge. The information most frequently requested is the location of restaurants, transportation, restrooms, gardens and the schedule of events in the Park. In addition, info about each of 24 listed institutions and organizations is regularly requested, including unique screens promoting park projects and exhibits. The Spanish language screens account for nine percent of the requests. The other three sides of each kiosk house an ATM, a large map of Balboa Park and several printed sponsor messages. Free WiFi is also accessible from each kiosk.

The Friends of Balboa Park is now accepting donations for Phase II – to construct and operate two more kiosks located at the Inspiration Point tram stop and the Pan American Plaza. Please check out the website of the subcontractors that operate the kiosks to view a special video produced to describe in detail their functions.
