“And how did North Park get a brand, spanking new parking structure when they have NO parking meters, Ms. Schultz? They took it from Hillcrest! It’s our turn now. $8,500,000 could have bought and paid for a pretty nice parking garage by now”
— Wendell Hitch in response to the SD Uptown News story on the Uptown Partnership

Urban Outfitters coming to Hillcrest soon

Urban Outfitters opening soon in Hillcrest

The former location of Corvette Diner on Fifth Avenue (between University & Washington) is being transformed into a trendy retail outlet for the chain store Urban Outfitters. Need a job? They are taking applications. The sad news is that the mural that had been on on the building’s south wall for decades has been covered with white paint. Aye yi yi.

Insiders tell us that another store will be located in the rear of the large storefront. CB2 will feature affordable, modern housewares and furniture for apartment, loft and home.

No Parking for SD street sweeping, 3700 block of SEventh Avenue

How disappointing...

Unlike most San Diego streets that are swept at least once a week, the 3700 block of Seventh Avenue only gets cleaned on the third Tuesdays of the odd months (six times a year). It should have been cleaned today. Two neighbors who care have been given “no park” signs by the city and have been instructed to place them along the street 24 hours in advance as reminders to not park here because the big city cleaning machine will be coming. Most people obey and don’t park between Robinson & Pennsylvania from 7am-4pm....so no one was albe to use this street today, but it had no service from the city.

It’s disappointing, but it’s a fact. Hillcrest has fewer city services than any other neighborhood in San Diego.

“For years I have heard people comment about what a joke Pride is. Can’t we turn it around into meaning more than a party weekend?”

Marston House just north of Balboa Park in San Diego

Marston House reopens this Thursday

After being closed for months, you’re invited to celebrate the Grand Opening Preview Party at the Marston House Museum & Gardens. The much anticipated event has happened with a lot of hard work and dedication. Here’s an opportunity to show your support and make a difference in the ongoing operations and restoration. Tickets are only $35 for SOHO members; and $50 for non-members.

A Plein-air exhibit of some very important paintings to San Diego’s history will be on display. This temporary exhibit includes notable early California artists such as Charles Fries and Alfred Mitchell. Some of the paintings will be for sale and, if you would like to purchase a painting for your collection, a portion of the sale will benefit the Marston House.
