![]() ![]() “The cream of the crop” Ready for your next trip to San Diego’s best farmers market for vine ripe tomatoes or fresh picked artichokes? Until 2pm every Sunday, rain or shine except for Christmas and New Year’s Day, the Hillcrest Farmers Market bustles along Normal Street north of University and south of Lincoln. Consistently voted the best of San Diego’s many fabulous farmers markets, this weekly community gathering was created in 1997 by the Hillcrest Business Association (HBA). Today’s outdoor market has nearly 150 vendor booths with everything from cappuccinos and fresh flowers to bee pollen, eggs and honey. Farm picked produce is displayed on tables for your shopping pleasure. Tasty food booths with scrumptious items like crêpes, gyros, panninis, empanadas and Thai food fill the west side of the market. It also includes many exciting products and services from artisan crafts to massage, and plants to olives, pasta, cheese and hummus. Need an extra copy of HillQuest’s Urban Guide? Stop by the HBA info booth north of the 7th Day Buskers acoustic roots music. It’s a great place to meet neighbors and support the local business association. The certified market is the largest moneymaker for the HBA, which uses the income to improve the area for local merchants. The organization will add covered tables and a visiting chef series this year. With the toe tapping tunes filling the air, a stroll among the picturesque booths is a splendid way to spend a Sunday morning or afternoon. Bring your camera…the plentiful produce and colorful bouquets provide a cornucopia for any shutter. As a bonus, many vendors graciously let you sample their faire before buying. (Note: adhere to health regulations. Unless they are service animals, please leave your dogs at home.) FYI: If you are driving to the market from the core of Hillcrest, take a shortcut by using the 163-north ramp on Tenth Avenue then quickly exiting on Washington Street (note the white dotted line with arrows on the fold-out map in the current HillQuest, an Urban Guide). |

Free screening Saturday of “The World According to Monsanto” Genetically modified foods, chemical-covered crops — a system so corrupt it is responsible not only for the demise of many small farms, but also for human illness and possibly death. Learn about the power players dominating the nation's agricultural industry this Saturday evening at 6pm with a free screening of “The World According to Monsanto” at the Joyce Beers Community Center, on Vermont Street north of Cleveland. The screening is part of the San Diego Roots Sustainable Food Project’s Food for Thought Film Series, educating viewers about important issues surrounding food and its connection to health. According to the organization’s website, Slow Food San Diego will provide locally-sourced, healthy snacks to attendees. A discussion about the local food movement will follow the screening. |

Speak up, get involved — two California Senate bills need your supportPlease take note: two state Senate bills are headed for a floor vote in the next week or two that are important to the LGBT community. Both are being targeted by opponents on the right. SB 54, introduced by Assemblymember Leno, would allow the State of California to recognize legal same-sex marriages performed during the 18 months they were legal in California – they would have the same status as same-sex marriages performed in California have per the recent court decision. SB 572, co-introduced by several legislators, would recognize Harvey Milk’s birthday. Opposition to both bills is coming into legislators at a rate as high as 5-1 against the bills. Even if you are sure your representative is supportive, or even a sponsor, of either bill — they still need to hear from supporters. Call, email or fax your representative with a simple “I support SB 54 and SB 572.” Click here to locate your representative get contact details. Thank for your time & attention. |

![]() Women’s Equality Day celebration Every year on August 26 those who fought in the struggle for a woman’s right to vote are honored. When writing the US Constitution our founding fathers forgot about their mothers, aunts and daughters. It took 144 years (from 1776 to 1920) before women were allowed the same right as their brothers to choose leaders on election day. “Failure is impossible,” said Susan B. Anthony. But she didn’t mention how slow success could be. Susan B. Anthony was amazing — working every waking hour for 50 years so women could vote. Sadly, she died 14 years before it became a reality. On Thursday, August 27 the San Diego Democratic Club will honor the sacrifices women made during the 72-year struggle that culminated with passage of the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution giving women the right to vote in 1920. It will serve as a reminder that the struggle is not over. Panel members; Patty Bellasalma, Attorney and President of California National Organization for Women; Alex Rooker, Female Vice-Chair of the California Democratic Party; and Assemblymember Lori Saldaña, Chair of the California Legislative Women’s Caucus will discuss the continued fight for women’s rights and the close relationship between feminism, LGBT rights, and the Democratic Party. A display of suffragist memorabilia graciously on loan from the Women’s History Museum will be on display. The event will be held at the Joyce Beers Community Center in the Uptown Shopping District (on Vermont Street north of Cleveland Avenue) The 2nd Annual Suffrage Parade and Ball will be held on Saturday, August 29th — the parade will begin at 4pm on the west side of Balboa Park before marching across the Laurel Street Bridge. That same evening a dinner and dance a “Journey to the 30s” will be presented in the ballroom of the Balboa Park Club from 6-9pm featuring Sue Palmer’s Motel Swing Orchestra. |
