“Amazing, isn’t it? Now that it is not really permissible to call us ‘freaks and queers’ etc, this is a new line for allowing bigotry. And from all groups, no less, the Mormons..who were run out of NY & IL...to me this is about as weak of an excuse as you can get. Just come out and say it Herbert ‘I AM A BIGOT’.”

Hillcrest Farmers Market -- every Sunday from 9-2 on Normal Street north of University Avenue

Hillcrest Farmers Market every Sunday from 9am-2pm

Today’s a fun day! Head on over to the Hillcrest DMV (on Normal Street south of Lincoln Avenue) for the Hillcrest Farmers Market, which has been voted San Diego’s favorite year after year. Shop for fresh produce, colorful 7th Day Buskers at the Hillcrest Farmers Marketflowers, crafts, food and toe-tapping tunes from Shawn P. Rohlf and the 7th Day Buskers. A great way to begin is by to stopping at Divine Madman Coffee for a cup of joe from the ladies.

With an assortment of tasty eats from around the world, sometimes it’s difficult to make a choice. Have you tried the coconut pancakes from Saranya & the Black Thai? Get a handful of these unique treats for only $1. This is also where to find nutty flavored red rice with wonderful curries. Visit the Argentinean Gourmet for a variety of empandas — my favorite is the ricotta cheese with raisins..and for a special treat, try one of Seb’s fabulous pannis. Need a new HillQuest, Urban Guide? Stop by and say hi to Mike in the Hillcrest Business Association (HBA) booth just north of the band where you may also pick up a "Fabulous Hillcrest” button. Please leave Bowser at home (unless he’s a service dog). The Hilcrest Farmers Market is also a great place to find unique gifts.

It's the peak of the summer produce so don’t miss the fresh peaches, nectarines, sweet corn, tomatoes and more from R&L Farms, Lone Oak Ranch, Seacoast Farms, Smit Orchard and Kawanos Farms for the best in berries. As a bonus, half of the market’s proceeds benefit community activities through the HBA.

Judy Forman leading the Suffragette Parade through Balboa Park

Women’s Equality Parade & Ball Today
March for history on Saturday afternoon with Judy the Beauty (right) leading the parade for equality!

The San Diego Women's History Museum & Educational Center hosts the second annual Suffrage Parade & Ball at the Balboa Park Club in celebration of Women's Equality Day. Put on your best Suffrage outfit (long white with purple and gold sash) and join us this Saturday afternoon for a march for equality.

Everyone is welcome. Meet on the west mesa of Balboa Park at 4pm near the Kate Sessions statue (on the west side of the Laurel Street Bridge). The parade will march
Dancersto the Balboa Park Club for lemonade refreshments. Join as many women’s groups gather, speak and parade across the bridge into the heart of the park with banners, flags and placards. Help celebrate the 1920 passage of the 19th Amendment which gave women the right to vote. Hopefully, one day women will have equality in America and globally.

After the parade the annual Suffrage Ball “Journey to the 30s” will held in the ballroom of the Balboa Park Club from 6-9pm featuring costumes, cars and a dinner dance with Sue Palmer’s Motel Swing Orchestra. Tickets are $30 or two for $50 and available by calling (619) 233-7963 or by clicking here for more information.

“I do believe my rights were flagrantly violated by the uninvited and illegal intrusion into my home by Deputy Abbott and by his excessive and unwarranted actions thereafter.”

“I would say this is an effort to broaden and engage a much broader cross section of folks, rather than the same three people showing up at a City Council meeting. This is about capturing and organizing the passion that people feel for this community.”
— Bill Geppert chair of Mayor Sanders’ new Civic Leadership Team

Neville Willsmore presenting St. Paul’s Senior Homes new develop plans at the Bankers Hill/Park WEst Community Association meeting on Wednesday, August 26, 2009
Bankers Hill/Park West residents meeting held
Over 50 residents and visitors attended the Bankers Hill/Park West Community Association meeting Wednesday evening at St. Paul’s Manor conference room. City council representative Steven Puetz from District 2 informed constituents that he will be leaving his post effective immediately to work on a political campaign in Connecticut, and the new neighborhood representative for Council 2 is Brian Pepin.
Community SDPD officer John Graham reported a few house break-ins and warned everyone to lock doors and close windows. Intruders have been cutting the screens to gain access. He also announced an open house at SDPD Central Division (25th & Imperial) on Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 5:30pm to introduce the new commanding officers. Everyone is welcome. Bring questions and concerns.
Most of the evening’s discussion centered around St. Paul’s Senior Homes & Services plans to redevelop their property along Fourth Avenue between Maple & Nutmeg. They will be going before the Planning Commission next Thursday asking for an amendment to the Uptown Community Plan which would allow a rezone of their land from Office/Residential (44-73 dwelling units per acre) to Mixed Use/Residential which would allow 73-110 dwellings. The amendment would allow the eastern portion of the project to extend 12 feet over the 60 foot height limit (to 72'). Several neighbors protested the increased size. Should the request be granted by the city, representatives of St. Paul’s promised that they will continue to outreach to the neighborhood for input as they develop the project. (Above is consulting architect Neville Willsmore with renderings of the six-story design.)
Next up were consultants Glen Schmidt, FASLA and R. Brad Lewis, ASLA, who presented revised design guidelines for the northeast portion of Bankers Hill/Park West incorporating suggestions from the last Bankers Hill/Park West Community Association meeting held on March 18.
Residents are concerned about the 50+ traffic accidents (many involving multiple vehicles) that have recently occured in the area. Happily, we finally are making progress on placing stop signs at strategic locations along the Fourth/Fifth/Sixth corridors to break the speed of traffic. Thank you to City Council President Pro Tem Kevin Faulconer who has played a critical role in moving this process forward.

“I just saw a message on the television from the mayor of San Diego asking folks to limit water usage because of the shortage. Could we ask Mayor Jerry Sanders to limit the amount of money spent by the city of San Diego, as there appears to be a shortage?”
