“The city can’t support
parks or libraries because they
must support their extreme pension liability. The purpose of this city
government is to provide benefits to the city employees not services to
the taxpayers.” — RB to the Voice of San
Diego re: trading a park for a library

Help close loopholes on reckless
demolitions? At the beginning of September the Uptown Planners unanimously approved putting forward proposals to close loopholes to address reckless demolitions. What is a reckless demolition? It is when seemingly overnight a building disappears. Sometimes with permits issued, but not always the right permit. Sometimes reports have been manipulated to skew facts in favor of issuing permits or sometimes without any permits at all. The Uptown Planners group has studied this issue over several years and proposed recommendations to specifically close the loopholes and add checks and balances into the current system. “The end result will be better compliance of the existing review processes,” said Leo Wilson, Chair of the Uptown Planers, “This will better enable preservation of San Diego’s historic architecture and cultural heritage; decrease discarding high quality materials such as old growth lumber; and ultimately result in a clear and more consistent review process that benefits everyone.” Shifting the culture of bypassing the systems that are in place is a challenge, but with numerous reckless demolitions that have occurred in Uptown since a new 45-year-review team has been installed, and the upset that it causes in the community, the Uptown Planners chose to provide proposals to close the loopholes to the City Council. The Land Use & Housing committee of the City Council will hear this issue at 2pm this Wednesday, September 23. Please help save the character of Hillcrest and San Diego’s other older communities. “There have been adamant requests to have
the park built as soon as possible. The neighborhood has an incredible
number of children under the age of 5. They were promised the
park, and they deserve it.” — City Councilwoman Sherri
Lightner, who represents Pacific Highlands Ranch

down on all this if I lived here. But where else are they going to go?” — Jonathan Payne who wants a

“They
come by, they dig out plants, primarily the large showy plants....I've
replaced this plant several times...I’m just wondering, what’s next? I
mean, if it’s plant materials now as
they move through the property, what is it going to be next?” — Hillcrest resident Steve Bertiz

Support saving our older neighborhoods?Help close loopholes that perpetuate reckless demolitions of the fabric of our community Our Uptown neighborhoods continue to encounter properties that are demolished/destroyed before going through the city’s normal review process. This short homemade video highlights some of the issues. Many times it is hard to find good photos of houses just before they are being demolished or when they were looking their best, but these will give you an idea of how our the character of our community is being destroyed. This topic is being brought forward to the San Diego City Council Land Use & Housing Committee chaired by Hillcrest’s Councilmember Todd Gloria. If you live here because you cherish the character of our Uptown communities, you are encouraged to show your support for closing the current loopholes that allow for these demolitions. The Land Use & Housing Committee will discuss this issue at 2pm on Wednesday, September 23 at 202 C Street. Show your support by attending and/or sending a letter to the Chair and committee members of Land Use & Housing. This will be extremely helpful. Please help save the character of San Diego’s older communities. Historic neighborhoods turn a great city into a fine city. HillQuest publisher nominated to Partnership BoardTuesday afternoon Councilmember Todd Gloria nominated Nancy Moors, publisher of HillQuest, an Urban Guide to the Uptown Partnership Board of Directors. In a letter to Executive Director Carol Schultz, the Councilman Gloria said, “I am confident that with her background in small business and community activism, as well as her leadership experience, Nancy will prove to be a valuable member of the Uptown Partnership Board of Directors.” This is part of an effort to expand their board at the request of Gloria and Councilman Kevin Faulconer who will be nominating another board member soon. “I am happy and honored that Councilmember Gloria has nominated me as his appointment. Recently I have been critical of the Partnership, however, I understand that each organization has its unique set of challenges, and I look forward to working as a boardmember with the staff at the Uptown Partnership towards reaching our common goals,” commented Moors. |
