Historic Home Tour this Sunday 10am-4pmThis “is a street where some of the most famous families lived,” said SOHO Executive Director Bruce Coons. “It has some of the best architecture of the period and of course by one of the greatest architects. It’s one of the streets that is the least changed, and the houses are very much the way they have been.” SOHO Annual Historic Home Tour will be held Sunday, March 21 from 10am-4pm along Seventh Avenue on the northern edge of Balboa Park. Tour five private homes designed by 20th Century Master Architects, Irving Gill, William Hebbard, Frank Mead and Richard Requa. Advance tickets are $30 or $35 if purchased on Sunday. The event headquarters are located at the Marston House Museum Shop at 3525 Seventh Avenue. Call (619) 297-9327 for more information. |

“Efficiency reform doesn’t happen
overnight, but if you don’t start doing it, it never happens. That’s been the problem of the city’s
budget. There’s always been promises that we will reform city
departments, but they immediately plug holes due to short-term budget
fixes without solving the long-term problem.” — Councilman Carl DeMaio re: San
Diego’s newest budget deficit

Irish fun for all Green was the color of the day along the east side of Balboa Park as the Irish Congress of Southern California held their 30th annual St. Patrick’s Day parade (the largest west of the Mississippi). Three city councilmembers (Carl DeMaio, left, Todd Gloria, right, and Sherri Lightner) took part in the celebration. |

“I was at the meeting and I did hear that the
neighborhood thinks it has reached adequate density levels...But somehow I missed the part about not
wanting to modernize. New & better infrastructure is modernization
and it is most desired. The premise of the presentation was geared
toward new building & change, but only in the spirit of what
Hillcrest already is — because it’s great & it works!” — HTC boardmember Tim Gahagan re:
SD Reader story that Hillcrest doesn’t want to modernize

With treats homebaked by her mom, a DJ spinning tunes and her dad pouring the champagne, Amy Capano celebrated the 15th anniversary of Hillcrest’s most popular candle & gift shop this evening. Friends, family and members of the Hillcrest Business Association filled
the lovely storefront which is located just west of the Hillcrest sign
in the heart of the neighborhood. Since its opening in March 1995, Cathedral has stocked the finest lines of candles, candle accessories and home decor — specializing in top quality and hard to find collections. Next time you need a memorable gift for someone special, visit Cathedral at 435 University Avenue. Here’s to the next 15 years, Amy! |

“I absolutely want to keep homosexuals out of public
office and not be allowed to
influence our schools, textbooks, altering marriage, children, and on
and on.” — Lorie Zapf in a 2006 email to
James Hartline (She is now running for Donna Frye’s City Council seat.)
