I find it interesting that someone managing a parking meter district in five parts of a community is making $75,000 a year. Maybe that will be our next career move.”

“It is not possible to overstate the importance of Balboa Park. There’s more to the park than just the Prado. The park, in many ways, is half done.”

Thanks to Hillcrest Clean TEAM volunteers the neighborhood is looking tidy once more following a festive gay pride weekend (July 19, 2010)
Hillcrest is clean again...
This morning the Hillcrest Clean TEAM put the shine back on the neighborhood. All volunteers (like Luke, Brian and Jim, at the left) received free orange t-shirts and a huge dose of community pride. The group worked from 6:30 until 11:30am picking up trash along the parade route and streets radiating out from the business district.

Thanks to
San Diego Pride for supporting this annual fundraising effort for the Hillcrest Town Council...and a HUGE thanks to everyone for pitching in and helping sweep up Hillcrest. Wanna be a future cleaner? Contact Tim Gahagan at (619) 315-7058.

Hillcrest Clean TEAM and HillQuest in the 2010 Pride Parade, July 17, 2010

Saturday’s a fun for-all

Led by the Dykes on Bikes (aka Women’s Moto) the 2010 Pride Parade was the best produced parade in years as the colorful train traveled through Hillcrest along University and Sixth avenues. A cheering crowd of over 150,000 lined the 1.5 mile route for the 36th annual Gay Pride Parade with over 140 floats and organizations. In addition to the parade, the Gay Pride Cloris Leachman, 2010 Pride Marshal readys herself for the paradeFestival began yesterday and Ann Garwood, 2010 Pride emcee Ophelia and Nancy Moorswill continue today in Balboa Park south of Laurel in Marston Point. Actress Cloris Leachman (left), and activists Cleve Jones and Stuart Milk, Harvey’s nephew, were this year’s grand marshals. Kudos to the parade organizers led by Ben Orgovan for the well-orchestrated line-up (San Diego’s largest civic event).

The two-day festival site on the grassy slopes in glorious Balboa Park continues today. “One World, One Heart, One Pride” headliners include Blake Lewis (4:55pm) and Devo (6pm). Here’s all the entertainment. At right, the talented Ophelia, emcee of Saturday’s main stage, with Community Service Award honorees Ann Garwood and Nancy Moors, founders of the Hillcrest History Guild.
