“Every citizen in this great country recites the Pledge of Allegiance that ends ‘with liberty and justice for all.‘ The Pledge of Allegiance does not exclude anyone or any group. The ruling on Proposition 8 simply enforces the pledge every citizen of this country has taken.”

Activists marching from Sixth & University on their way to San Diego's LGBT Center to celebrate the decision that Prop 8 is unconstitutional

Celebrating a victory against Prop 8

Thousands of activists marched from the heart of Hillcrest to the LGBT Center Wednesday evening to celebrate the historic legal ruling that struck down California’s Proposition 8 law banning same-sex marriage. Many gathered at Sixth & University for the 6pm march down University to The Center, where a Town Hall meeting was held.

“I am very optimistic about the outcome. Equal protection is in the Constitution for just this reason,” explained Fred Karger of Californians Against Hate. The decision was long overdue.

August 4, 2010 movie on the roof of Whole Foods Market (Julie & Juliet)

Movie on Whole Food Market roof

Several hundred people enjoyed a fun Wednesday night under the stars watching Julie & Julia, this summer’s “drive-in” movie. Thanks to Whole Foods Market, the Hillcrest History Guild and HillQuest for again presenting a movie from the market’s lot as well as B of A and AT&T for the use of their parking lots for movie viewers.

Many folks said they had not yet seen the award winning movie. A great time was had by all. Big thanks to the gals from Viva Pops for sharing all their great flavors with the crowd. My favorite was peach ginger -- yum!

“That our two top county law enforcement officers, both sheriff and district attorney, carefully defer taking salary raises while campaigning and inform the electorate of their decision, thus appearing to have the best interests of the people in mind, then, after winning re-election, step up and pick up extra money, is much more than ‘small potatoes,’ as you put it. Call it what it is: betrayal of public trust.”

“Labor leaders may not get it. But the public does. When many taxpayers can’t find jobs, how is it fair for them to pay the entire cost for a police officer to retire at 50 on nearly full salary?
