“One would think that after two trials, hundreds of thousands of taxpayers’ dollars wasted and her reputation damaged, that Ms. Dumanis would reconsider her approach. Or at the least create a guideline for patients to follow and avoid prosecution when they are following the law.”

3-car accident at the corner of 5th & Spruce on Friday afternoon, August 13, 2010
An open letter from from Leo Wilson...
3rd August accident at 5th & Spruce

Another accident has occured at this dangerous Bankers Hill intersection. Yesterday afternoon’s wreck involved three vehicles. One person was seriously injured and taken to the hospital.

SDPD also reported two other accidents here in August and another in March. Since the new stop signs were placed between Laurel and Upas at 4th and 5th, accidents have fallen there, and made this intersection even more confusing. One Bankers Hill resident recalls, “I had a fender bender there on July 1 when a left-turning SUV hit my car as it was crossing Spruce from east to west. Neither of us Uptown Partnership door showing hours (Friday afternoon August 13, 2010)was hurt, but we had a discussion about how hard it is to see traffic coming on 5th and what a dangerous intersection it is...We agreed that we generally avoid it because it’s so difficult to get a clear break in traffic to safely cross or even pull onto 5th Avenue.”

Many have called for a simple stop sign here for years. Restaurateur Jimmy Carter has requested one at his corner for over a decade. The Bankers Hill/Park West Community Association (supported by Uptown Planners and Councilmember Kevin Faulconer) also requested a stop sign be installed. Unfortunately, action by the Uptown Partnership blocked the placement of a 4-way stop sign here. Under community pressure, Uptown Partnership has attempted to reverse their block, but sadly it wasn’t soon enough for these folks above. A local resident went over to the Uptown Partnership office to let them know of yesterday’s wreck and was surprised to learn that they close at 12:30pm every Friday. (Donna Frye pointed out last month that the salaries at Uptown Partnership grew from $164,000 to $206,000 from 2008 to 2009. She indicated that this might be a good next career move for a city councilmember. Given the hours, it appears to be a pretty lucrative part-time job.)

“This week the city announced it would comply with state law and impose the higher deductions. Yet our bafflement remains. The Sanders administration improperly blocked a decision to make city employees pay more toward the cost of their benefits at the same time the mayor and other city leaders say making these employees pay more for benefits is crucial to the city’s fiscal health.”

And we celebrated in Hillcrest
What fun!! Thank you, revelers, for raising a jubilant glass to our favorite neighborhood. The Toast to Hillcrest filled the streets yesterday evening as happy folks enjoyed samples from 34 of our neighborhood’s best bars, bistros, restaurants and wine bars — both old favorites and brand new eateries! Everardo commented, I’ve lived in San Diego for 24 years and this is the most fun I’ve ever had in Hillcrest! Re-discovering favorite haunts I hadn’t visited in a while along with finding lots of new places that I am sure to visit again!

Hundreds of festive participants joined in the fun with many groups strategizing the most advantageous walking route — while others jumped on the double-decker bus with Benny Cartwright & Ricky
Mike pouring a Hypnotic Cosmo on the back patio of Number One Fifth Avenue for the 2010 Toast to HillcrestCervantes. Thanks to each of the businesses that offered up their best to support the Hillcrest History Guild. The HHG appreciates everyone’s participation in the event. Decor with Distinction and Apple Spice Catering passed out fresh chocolate chip cookies as toasters checked in at 5th & Robinson....and throughout the Toast to Hillcrest revelers, August 12, 2010 -- Hillcrest, San Diego, Californiaevening on the open air roof of the bus (donated by HillQuest, the Urban Guide).

Did you take any fun photos? Please send them our way. And mark your calendars for next year’s party — it’s gonna be even better. (We’ll have a few added surprises!) The fifth annual Toast will again be held on the Thursday after CityFest. See you then!
