Might as well get used to it...
it’s gonna be a wet weekend.

Forecasters say the storm
will linger through Tuesday!

Failure to replace storm drains will cost SD millions

Rain also fell during this evening’s AFC wild-card game at the Q when
the Bolt boys ended their season with a heartbreaking loss to the Jets.

A lawsuit seeking to overturn San Diego’s mayoral election was filed yesterday stating that election officials have “unlawfully and unconstitutionally disenfranchised thousands of eligible San Diego voters...and have denied them their fundamental right to vote and their rights to due process and the equal protection of the laws.”

County Supervisor Toni Atkins (it has a nice ring to it!)
Nicole announced it in this week’s GLT — Our popular City Councilmember Toni Atkins will be running for the 4th District seat of the County Board of Supervisors in 2006. After much urging, support and commitments from labor unions, environmentalist, business and Democratic leaders (there currently is not one Democrat on the county board), Toni will be a candidate in this Democratic district. There is one major problem, though, and it’s that the current county supervisor who is running for re-election is our community’s longtime friend Ron Roberts. Many who are friends with both Toni and Ron are not looking forward to this race, but Toni will run even if Ron sticks to his decision to seek re-election. Fasten your seatbelt – it’s going to be a bumpy ride. We wonder who GLT publisher Michael Portantino will endorse.

Thank you, Senator!

This afternoon Barbara Boxer
lodged a formal protest in the nation’s capitol that the Ohio votes “were not, under all known circumstances, regularly given” in the November election.

By law, a protest signed by members of the House and Senate requires both chambers to meet separately for up to two hours to consider it. Lawmakers are allowed to speak for no more than five minutes each.

The Senate session lasted just over an hour and ended when the chamber voted 74-1 to uphold Ohio’s votes, with Boxer the lone vote. The House used its full time and followed suit, 267-31.

FEDs vs MEDs
A little-known law may finally challenge the feds’ 30-year stall in recognizing medical marijuana.
But it also raises a big question: Who decides what is medicine?

More than two dozen Imperial Beach residents lost their vehicles – and in some cases, the keys to their livelihood – today when an arsonist sparked a fire in an apartment complex parking lot that caused an estimated $600,000 in damage. Three cars were also torched on Alabama Street in North Park. Please be a good neighbor and keep your eyes open for one another.

Have you seen Mission Hill’s Pioneer Park since last week’s winter storm?

Many of the diagonally planted eucalyptus trees put in by Kate Sessions (to divide the former cemetery from Catholics and Protestants) are themselves
gone forever.

Voices for open and truthful election results were raised this afternoon in downtown San Diego at a march and rally.

John Spreckels

Avid organ enthusiast John D. Spreckels and his brother Adolph gave this grand instrument and the elegant pavilion that surrounds her to our city in 1915. The nation’s first outside organ celebrated her 90th birthday today with a five-hour concert in Balboa Park for thousands of happy fans who enjoyed a multitude of performers, tours of her pipes...and free birthday cake on a beautiful New Year’s Day afternoon.
