A Friend of Maple Canyon: Al Weiss
Last week 70-80 truckloads of rip rap (that’s large chunks of rock) were unloaded at the end of Palm Street just west of Fourth Avenue. Each truckload weighed over 22 tons. That’s a total of approximately 1,650 tons of rock. And what did they do with all this rock? They dumped it into Maple Canyon!

Living on the treasured canyon, Al is concerned about its health, so he talked to the city who has known of the problem for over a year. But, since we don’t have enough money to take preventative action, it had to wait until a crisis developed before anything was done. The city’s project manager said, “Current activity at this location is an intermediary but emergency measure to safeguard public safety and private property on the north side of the Palm Street terminus (at Fourth). The geologist recommended immediate support of the slope or the nearby building would be lost. With the recent storms cracks widened significantly and increased in number, reaching the foundation of the  building."

What are they going to do about it? The city says, “The rock being placed now is a structural layer that will be covered by the permanent solution which will match the existing canyon in grade and vegetation. We do not have a complete plan for that solution — the geologist and civil engineer are working on a proposal now. A preliminary plan should be ready in a couple weeks."

What a spectacular Tuesday!
Did you enjoy our beautiful weather?

Everyone was out and about on the streets of Hillcrest. Seen lunching at the ever-popular Hamburger Mary’s was our own City Commissioner Nicole Murray-Ramirez, San Diego Police Chief William Lansdowne, Baja Betty’s general manager Matt Ramon and SDPD Lt. Margaret Schaufelberger who oversees the North Park/Hillcrest divison. The happy group gave two thumbs up to the food as well as the great community atmosphere!

The chief will present a report to the City Council tomorrow announcing that SD’s serious-crime rate decreased by 2.8% in 2004. However, auto thefts and robberies increased.

Do I hear wedding bells?!?!  San Francisco County Superior Court Judge Richard Kramer said today
that withholding marriage licenses from gays and lesbians is unconstitutional.
Local leaders in the marriage equality movement gathered Monday evening at Exotic Bamboo in Hillcrest to celebrate today’s
San Francisco decision and to march through Hillcrest announcing to the community that although this is a significant victory,
the fight for full equality is not over. For more information contact Anthony White, EQCA-SD, (619) 384-7495 or email him.

Left Brain/Right Brain —
While sitting at your desk, lift your right foot off the floor and make CLOCKWISE circles...

While doing this, draw the number “6” in the air with your right hand.
(You can even try drawing 6 on a piece of paper with your right hand.)

Your foot will change direction, and there’s nothing you can do about it.
(Now, get back to work!)
