Another group rejects plans for Balboa Park bridge remodel

Dear Mayor Jerry Sanders, Honorable Councilperson Todd Gloria & Dr. Irwin Jacobs:

Balboa Park and the Cabrillo Bridge, 1916The Neighborhood Historic Preservation Coalition opposes the current plans for an addition/appendage bridge and road to be built onto the historic Cabrillo Bridge in Balboa Park. These plans will destroy and impact forever the iconic historic landscape, and they also include the removal of over 82 feet of the Cabrillo Bridge railing. These actions would forever destroy the architectural and cultural integrity of this treasured historic landmark of California.

This view of Balboa Park is vital to the National Historic Register District status. The impact will be significantly adverse and will embroil the City of San Diego in costly litigation that will mar that national image of San Diego in the eyes of the nation. There is no possible mitigation for such an adverse effect.

We ask the City of San Diego, San Diego Historical Resources Board, the State Historic Preservation Officer, the Balboa Park Committee, and the 2015 Balboa Park Centennial Celebration Steering Committee to reject the proposed plans for any additional roads, appendages, or off ramps to the Cabrillo Bridge or inside the park.

Sincerely,
Ronald V. May, Chair
Neighborhood Historic Preservation Coalition
