Iconic Cabrillo Bridge now closed until April for retrofit

bridge-closedThe 100-year-old bridge over Highway 163 that connects vehicles from the west side to the center of Balboa Park is undergoing a $38 million rehabilitation and retrofit project. no-cars-on-bridgeThe iconic Cabrillo Bridge will be closed to car traffic to bring it up to current earthquake standards from January 2 through April.

The roadway used by many to access the museums in Balboa Park will also be repaved. Caltrans is planning to keep a narrow walkway open for pedestrians and bicyclists who dismount and walk their bikes.

The bridge is expected to reopen in May, and the project is expected to be completed before Balboa Park’s 2015 Centennial Celebration. A Caltrans sign notes that “contractors will be working through the summer of 2014 to restore the historic Cabrillo Bridge and Laurel Street access to Balboa Park.”
