Jeffery TaubenbergerFor the past decade, Jeffery Taubenberger — a government scientist — has been ona quest for one of the world’s deadliest killers. This week, amid growing fear of the bird flu in Asia, he announced that he had caught up with the bug. He was the lead scientist who opened the 1918 Pandora’s box for flu clues, reconstructing the virus that is believed to have killed 50 million humans around the world.

While other nations have ordered enough antiviral medication to treat between 20-40% of their populations, the federal government has only ordered enough to treat less than 2% of Americans.     — Senate Dem leaders
