Noah’s Wonderland to feature Hillcrest

Charles Kaufman taught Noah Tafolla how to bake artisan loaves at Bread & CieNoah Tafolla (right and below), producer of Wonderland, a favorite series on KPBS featuring San Diego neighborhoods visited Hillcrest the first week in November to film segments for an upcoming feature. Noah made an early morning stop at Bread and Cie where he learned the craft of baking perfect artisan loaves with Charles Kaufman, the multi-talented owner of this favorite bread and bakery cafe located at 350 University Avenue.

RubenNext, he stopped at Crest Cafe where he talked to the father-daughter team Luis and Cecelia Moreno along with cousin Ruben Medina (left) who oversees the kitchen. Noah waited tables and tried his hand at the grill cooking a butter burger and other tasty dishes in the homey cafe at 425 Robinson Avenue.

 

Wonderland still of Noah Tafolla, Ann Garwood & Nancy Moors at Fifth & University in HillcrestThe following day Noah took a tour around Hillcrest in the HillQuest electric car and learned about the history of our neighborhood with publishers Ann Garwood and Nancy Moors (also founders of the Hillcrest History Guild) who shared a few early stories of our great neighborhood while stopping at the Hillcrest sign and the Vermont Street bridge. Hillcrest was selected by the American Planning Association as one of America’s top ten great neighborhoods in 2007 (the first year they honored anycommunities).

Noah has weaved together a wonderful piece on our neighborhood including three segments which may be viewed on YouTube now by clicking on the photos above. KPBS (Cox channel 11) will first show the Wonderland episode featuring Hillcrest on Wednesday, January 5 at 10:30pm. Following next month’s debut, the Hillcrest episode will continue to air serveral times. Enjoy!!
