Thousands march to support equality

At 5pm this evening several thousand gay and lesbian marriage supporters gathered at Sixth & Laurel for a rally before marching downtown to the Hall of Justice. Rhythm Turner (right in brown shirt)lead the massThe popular rocker was a victim of a recent hate crime when she kissed her girlfriend after a gig in Mission Beach.

The California Supreme Court deliberated for three months on Prop 8 before ruling in favor of the ban. At issue was whether the amendment was put on the ballot properly, and what would happen to the thousands of gay and lesbian couples who got married legally before the ban was passed. The Supremes ruled the estimated 18,000 gay and lesbian couples will be able to stay married. Advocates are already making plan to return the issue to the ballot box, probably as early as next year.
