Update on k-rail removal at Tenth & Robinson

Unwanted k-rails at Tenth and Robinson

Unwanted k-rails at Tenth and Robinson

Nearly four years ago the City placed two concrete k-rails on the SW corner of Tenth & Robinson closing an eastbound lane and forcing vehicles exiting Highway 163 north to merge into one lane which bottlenecks traffic that backs up over the bridge…and beyond. The Hillcrest Town Council and several neighbors have been working with the city to fix this problem. On 7/10/10 Joe Kocurek representative for Assemblymember Lori Saldana informed the community that, “Cal-Trans responded to (Saldana’s) letter that the problem is a City problem, not a State problem.” Actually, this is a Hillcrest problem….and the community hopes it’s resolved in 2012. After being promised “two more weeks” since August, the current estimated date for their removal is mid-February.

Westbound exit onto Washington Street (and the hospitals) from Highway 163 north (Downtown)

Long overdue westbound exit onto Washington Street (and the hospitals) from Highway 163 north (Downtown). Design courtesy Jim Frost.

Note: If Highway 163 north had a westbound exit directly to UCSD Medical Center and Scripps Mercy Hospital via Washington Street, the congestion at this busy intersection (the current suggested route for ambulances is through the heart of the business district) would be diminished. Ann Garwood has been promoting this idea for years. Thanks to a design by Bankers Hill resident Jim Frost which will be posted on 1/18/12 those visiting HillQuest.com can visualize it, too.
